Drillboid - 2.5D Platformer - Contest Time!
I've been working on this game with capnbubs for the Unity contest on Kongregate. We're at the point now that we'd love to hear some feedback on it. The idea is a 2.5D platformer in which you explore procedurally-generated caves containing treasure and high-tech alien ruins, as well as some alien flora and fauna. It's still in early alpha, so there's a lot missing, but there's enough to play with that you might find it interesting: Feel free to check out our development log, too - I'll be posting on there about the methods I'm using for procedural generation and all that fun stuff, and capnbubs will probably have a bit to say about the art side of things, too! Enjoy!

Neat stuff there TLB, looks like the Unity engine has a lot of neat features. I poked around a bit on the site, but didn't see anything about the overall concept. What will be the goal of the game, scripted mission type things to retrieve certain treasures?

Every cave has a fuel cell of some kind at the bottom of it, so in order to leave the cave, you need to retrieve it for you ship. Outside of that, the goal is just to find treasure around the caves.

Ah that sounds interesting. What does the treasure do, just up your score, or can you buy upgrades or something?

I think for now, it'll just up your score, since we're on a deadline for the contest. We'll probably expand it afterwards, though, so then we'd add upgrades.

Are you eventually going to add motion to the ball form? At this point it's just momentum based and it can't move on it's own, unless I'm missing something.

Nope, you won't be able to control the ball form. You'll use it to get into pipes and cracks and such, and it'll probably be used as an attack.

This is really neat, because it's a Unity game I haven't made that doesn't lag, which makes it pretty unique.
Also, how is bubs doing this as well? How does he sleep?

Ah, so it's a public alpha now? Good, good.
Alas, there's nothing I can say about this that I haven't yet relayed to Bubs, so I'm just dropping by to say how good this is. Thumbs up, gentlemen.

Man, I love the playermodel. The animation, the aesthetic... It's absolutely top notch.

Makes me wish I knew how to make 3D models. The game itself is really pretty solid so far, but there isn't much to do. (I'm sure that'll change very soon)

Your timing is suspicious. Are you watching me or something? I just uploaded a version with something to do! Every level contains a glowing orb, and you have to locate it and bring it back to the surface. There's nowhere to bring it yet, but you can at least play around with the orb and see how it works. As well, capnbubs put in some lovely new backgrounds and effects.
