Son, I am disappoint.

The GAU-8 fires 30mm rounds. 30mm projectiles weigh an eighth of a pound.

That eighth pound (perhaps half of which is actual explosive) times sixty five. That is, sixty five, the number of rounds you're putting downrange per second.

Fiifty two pounds of ordinance, in a one second burst. You know what the most commonly dropped bomb in the US inventory is? The Mark 82 500 pound bomb. The A-10 carries, on average, 1200 rounds of ammunition. That's 960 pounds of ordinance, literally all of which could be dumped in twenty seconds. The A-10 has eight hardpoints. Carrying eight five hundred pound bombs, the A-10 can drop just about four times as much weight in bombs as bullets. But.

Mk 82s are unguided, "dumb" bombs. Even with modern avionics and training techniques, a circular error probability of roughly 100 meters is considered the cautious side of safe.

The GAU-8 can put eighty percent of its rounds inside a twenty foot circle at four thousand feet. Meaning that an average burst (three seconds) will put a solid hundred fifty pounds of ordinance inside a twenty foot circle. Half of which is explosive, remember. Each Mk 82 has 200 pounds of explosive in it, and the A-10 can put down that much explosive in just about as long as it takes you to order a mcchicken at mcdonald's.
