So, is the U.S caught in some unknown war in South America that we don't know about? Hmm.... Strange section of the military for a bomb too.

Carefully, carefully put the bomb down and approach the group, once again asking for input.

 Didn't even think about that. It should be U.S.A.F. yeah?

@PB: Do you know what the repercussions are of that action if you roll low?

Do bombs really activate if they fall 2-3 feet?

A new one wouldn't. An old unstable one might.

What? No. I thought the exposition at the beginning was clear enough. The U.S. has sent in a special task force to locate and investigate the Tree. None of the official governments in South America are even aware of the intrusion. The biplane and jet fighters are things of Yoman's invention that I never even planned or thought of, so I'm assuming he has his own explanations for those. I would guess the biplane may be the culmination of some smaller country or group's effort towards finding the Tree- perhaps using surplus military equipment, as indicated by the sort of old bomb on the very old plane- which was countered by patrolling USAF fighters.

Also, bombs typically have safety locks that need to be disengaged before their detonation can be triggered by percussive force. It is very possible that the bomb is not a dud, but merely has its safety on. Taking that safety off is an issue- it would most likely require disassembling the bomb, at least partially, with the potential of blowing it up on accident or crippling it even further- but we could always just set it off with other explosives, like grenades. Since it was released by the biplane in mid-air IIRC, it should have had its safety off anyways, which once again leads me to believe that the bomb wasn't even meant to be on the plane- it was perhaps roughly Jerry-rigged on.

Wait wait wait, if it survived crashing into the ground at potentially hundreds of miles an hour from potentially thousands of feet in the air, couldn't we be a little less cautious?

Explosives are like women, thus very unstable. And, like I said before, a new unused bomb that didn't get dropped from God knows where wouldn't have a problem if it got hit by a sledgehammer, let alone a drop from a couple of feet.

I remember watching a documentary about some new type of missile that, in order to simulate day after day of traveling across bumpy terrain was placed inside an industrial washing machine for a whole day. Then it was fired and hit the target with pinpoint accuracy.
