I'd be interested to know if you consider this a possibility, actually.

So would I.

IMO, Open-source would probably kill CC for good. The fact is that having a release at all is a gift enough, especially during these harsh economic times. Most indie devs lose motivation after four or five releases, the fact Data is even posting at all is a miracle. He could of built our hopes up and left for good straight afterwords.

So sayeth the lord. And yeah, basically this. If CC went open-source, it would make things worse, rather than better, I'm sure. Rather than just plugging in a few mods, you'd have to download the version, made by someone, then see if there were mods compatable with it, and working properly.

Hell, I don't know.
If Dan doesn't wish to finish what he started, why not give people who do (and can, atleast partially) a chance to do so?

I believe that one day it will happen.

I fail to see how being opensource would kill CC. It would just mean that the extremely motivated forumites would be working on the engine, rather than Data, who has admitted to being a lazy ♥♥♥♥ :)

Beyond the technical issues there is also finding a driven dev(s) that is willing to continue development of CC even though it may be a dead end situation. The fact that after seven years of development we still have the founding dev is a miracle.

--edit--
I have no idea why people think Data doesn't care, he mentioned in his last post that "down the road it will make a big difference" meaning he is planning to continue development of CC, stop parading to make it open source when we already have someone that is as dedicated as Data.

I think he should make it open source as a reward to people who have done a great service tot he game in his eyes, or pay the super-ultimate-open-source-collectors-edition price of... er... about $150USD?

I don't know how your currency works.

Dan could theoretically cloudsource his programming to an extent with no monetary or sales risk to him.

It's basically a synonym for crowdsource.

Yeah I was thinking of crowdsourcing, not cloudsourcing.

Bad idea Veg. Anything given to just a few people tends to find it's way to turrents almost every time. We should use this negative Attitude and make our own games with gamemaker or c++ or something.
