You would need to forward one port, which is reasonably easy as long as you have access to your router's forwarding page. As long as that's alright I can send along a basic installation to make sure your computer can support it.
If everything checks out then I can prepare a more robust server package and guide you along with the setup details.

Running a server on your main is not such a great idea, as we've seen from both Whitty and Lizzrd's servers. But, it's better than nothing so I will take what I can get.

A tangent, but might be interesting if any of you are planning on offering to host.
I'm beginning to hate MCAdmin on principle, so that would be the first action I recommend. Scrap MCAdmin, grab just plain hMod and some plugins, and either let me handle the configuration details or figure out what they mean yourself. Optionally, grab ZMA or ask me to put together a concoction of the two for you. To be honest, life will be a lot simpler if you pick just one of the server softwares. Less to worry about breaking during updates and less to worry about conflicts.
hMod is like Linux in that once you know what you're doing, it's the only game in town for raw power. At the expense of initial usability that is. And if we need any special plugins, I've already made two and know how the process works.

EDIT: Alpha you'd have to see what your connection would be without the stuff downloading. 0.3 wouldn't cut it for normal play, sadly.

I actually had ten torrents seeding and sixteen queud for seeding, and live streaming video and a torrent D/Ling. The seeds really killed my uplaod. Testing now without. That said, This machine is beast. It's an I7 with 8g of DDR3.

K, Without the seeds my D/L increased, but my U/L stayed the same. Weird, Anyways, looks like I won't be hosting.

Kicktar, your connection is godly. You have a spare machine lying around?

Sadly, no, and I fit all the requirements except me not wanting to maintain it.

Well if you had an extra machine and enough inclination to set up the remote access tools, you wouldn't have to.
You'd set it up so I could do it and then forget about it.

This is why I wouldn't mind hosting.

Undeniable proof that my ISP sucks.

Also, I only have 512mb of RAM. I could theoretically buy 2 more gigs for the model I'm using (HP pavilion a620n), but I don't have a spare $100 laying around :P The processor is 2.2Ghz though, fairly powerful (it was an awesome computer when I got it... in 2003) and it's capable of running all night. I think I'm automatically disqualified for this position, though, seeing as my internet connection's max potential is not very high, and most of the time, the speed changes quicker than a diabetic's blood sugar level, causing major lag on occasion.

tldr if someone is willing to buy me a two gig RAM upgrade and a year's subscription to a decent ISP, I'm up for this position.

EDIT: OH MY GOD FOIL YOU SUCK. I HOPE YOU DIE IN A FIRE.

Also, Pentium 4 at 2.something and ht enabled, so it's pretty decent, with two and a half gigs of ram.

For the people who have decent to awesome connections, PM me if:
1. You have an extra machine lying around with the requisite power OR
2. You don't mind hosting on your main for an extended period of time 24/7

Because I am ready to throw you the server software, instructions, and WhittySMP as soon as we have a candidate (and I have the time to compile the first two).

This is as good as it gets for me, if I'm using it off the high traffic hours.
