 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
I wasn't planning to make the announcement that soon, but I suppose I have to now.
So, here's the situation. Of those who can serve Minecraft (IE, have a spare computer with the requisite power), none of them save Whitty have the requisite connection speed. For a short time (approximately two weeks from today), I can host from my dorm room over Hamachi, but then winter break sets in. Same story for Bentus. Our options are as follows: 1. Find one of you (or one of your friends) who has both the hardware and the connection to host. I can provide the expertise. 2. Purchase an external hosting service and ask for donations (running costs are minimal, approximately $12 USD a month for a maximum of 10 concurrent users). 3. Purchase better internet service.
These are also listed in order of preference.

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
I'd be happy to host over the winter break. That's when we get new and better internet connection.

DragonXP and anyone else who's thinking of hosting, run this three times, and post the results here. Like Duh said, the big factor is going to be connection speed.

I'm not thinking about it, but just for asking sake... Is 16 minute 800 mb download and 11 minute 35 mb video clip upload good compared to you guys?

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
An upload speed of around 1-2Mb/s is fine and good for the amount of people we have. Here's the full required specifications:
+24/7 access to the internet with download|upload speeds of at least 1|2 Mb/s (that's Megabaud, 1024 baud, or 1024 bits per second) +A computer that is capable of running 24/7 (with possible small breaks every night at times of least usage if you like) with at least -2GB RAM -Single core 1.8GHz processor (dual core with same preferrable) -~3GB free HDD space +The time and inclination to either perform the maintenance I recommend or install remote access software so that I can remotely manage it for you
If you fit all of the above, I'd be happy to work with you and we can get started right away.

As a bonus, I already have a port forwarded for minecraft (though it's the old version and it's running mcadmin) This is with streaming video and a torrent on the connection. Dunno bout my connection.

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
Running a server on your main is not such a great idea, as we've seen from both Whitty and Lizzrd's servers. But, it's better than nothing so I will take what I can get.
A tangent, but might be interesting if any of you are planning on offering to host. I'm beginning to hate MCAdmin on principle, so that would be the first action I recommend. Scrap MCAdmin, grab just plain hMod and some plugins, and either let me handle the configuration details or figure out what they mean yourself. Optionally, grab ZMA or ask me to put together a concoction of the two for you. To be honest, life will be a lot simpler if you pick just one of the server softwares. Less to worry about breaking during updates and less to worry about conflicts. hMod is like Linux in that once you know what you're doing, it's the only game in town for raw power. At the expense of initial usability that is. And if we need any special plugins, I've already made two and know how the process works.
EDIT: Alpha you'd have to see what your connection would be without the stuff downloading. 0.3 wouldn't cut it for normal play, sadly.

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
Eh, I got 1.7Mb/s upload on average. 16.5Mb/s download. It's possible for me to keep my PC on 24/7. Running a laptop on a wood table: Doesn't overheat. 2GHz Dual Core, Can You Run It says it's effectively 3.3GHz though, somehow. 3GB RAM 70GB free on my hard drive, I can get more.
However, this is my laptop for everything else. It may go down for visiting my grandparents, or other somesuch stuff. Also, would I need to mess with the router to do this?
EDIT: Just saw you dislike main's. Guess I might be out.

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
It's not that I dislike mains, it's that it doesn't really work out well. Consider a situation in which you want to play something processor-intensive, like Cortex. Instant conflict between your desires and the server, and be honest, what is going to win out?

 Re: Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Server
"Something processor-intensive" don't really happen much on my PC. Although DF can get really high requirements... I could just play WoW a lot. If ya PM me the instructions, I can try my best, then we can decide if it's something I can do.
