These are epically fitting when you're struggling, but you barely make it.
Killing Floor - Abandon All
Fitting when your squad is waging attrition warfare with the patriarch, and success is looking doubtful, as your teammates drop like flies.

I guess I just like the instrumental message of "♥♥♥♥ JUST GOT REAL!" whenever it's applicable in a game.

Sorry for the old resurrection, but I had to post some stuff in here about one of my favorite games: MGS4. You don't really notice the music quite as much in-game because it's a pretty engrossing title, and whether you're fighting an onslaught of PMC soldiers, watching a cutscene, or trying to take down a boss, you have more bigger things to worry about than the background music. The soundtrack is really superb, though. Links to some of my favorites, in no particular order.
