NEWEST UPDATES, COMING TO YOU FROM CRAZY CENTRAL: Apparently the guys who "agreed" to move their "mosque" are all "jk bro" right now and Terry Jones is taking the next 24 hours to reconsider his original plan to burn Korans, so it's no longer a 100% certainty that we'll avoid a shitstorm.

Yes that was in the original article. They said that they were "relocating" the mosque but that was what Terry Jones said. The organizers for moving the mosque said that there wasn't any agreement at all.

Here is your citation:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11255366

More specifically from the article:

Quote:
'No agreement'

Mr Jones was joined at his news conference by Muhammad Musri from the Islamic Foundation of Central Florida.

Mr Musri said he and Mr Jones had committed to travelling to New York "to come to a decision on moving the mosque".

"We are committed to dissolving the situation here and there," he said.

He also thanked Mr Jones for his "courage and his willingness to take these serious events that are unfolding".

But the organisers of the New York centre said no agreement had been reached with Mr Jones.

Leader of the New York project, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf issued a statement saying he welcomed the cancellation of the Koran burning.

"However, I have not spoken to Pastor Jones or Imam Musri," he added.

"We are not going to toy with our religion or any other. Nor are we going to barter. We are here to extend our hands to build peace and harmony."

Mr Musri clarified to reporters that no guarantees about moving the Islamic centre had been given.

He and Mr Jones had only agreed to fly to New York to discuss the location of the Islamic centre with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf.

Leon: Yes, but he had agreed not to burn them at all, and now he's just "reconsidering". Different situations. This news is barely a few hours old and is the latest update.

Ah I probably missed it if was a few hours old.

Yea I need to focus more on the local news for updates on this.

Quote:
Imam: Pastor misrepresented Quran-burning deal
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - An imam says the leader of a small Florida church told him that he would call off a plan to burn the Quran because it would endanger troops, not because they had a deal to move the location of a mosque planned near ground zero.

Here are some links:

http://www.actionnewsjax.com/content/ac ... mk0-Q.cspx

I'll help you guys clarify this a bit:

So the Imaan is claiming that TJ (Terry Jones) called off the burning because it endangered Troops which was a threat he claimed didn't exist. TJ is claiming that there was a deal that if he didn't burn the books, they would move the mosque.

So basically, from what I see, his original goal was to get rid of the mosque and move it somewhere else. He thinks he's holding the advantage by essentially using the Koran as a hostage. This is misleading as burning the books might provoke bad things to happen.

I got from that that he is almost possibly making things up, do you think? Also, your statement seems logical...

Well, I think its ok to assume that he is making things up. But think about this:

He isn't making things up. From what I gather from his profile, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will change easily. He sticks to his principles. So I think he really is telling the truth. The Imaan might just be making it up to try to discredit him. I think Terry Jones is a hardliner. He is going to burn those books if they don't move the mosque.

And he could just be making it up but it doesn't seem like he is, all things considered.

This is from the BBC article:
Quote:
Florida pastor Terry Jones said he felt he had been lied to by a local imam who had got him to drop the plan

From this BBC seems to think that the Imaan more likely than not, made it up to try to stop him from burning the Korans which makes sense to me. I don't see why Terry Jones would lie, seeing how he needs credibility when he only has 50 followers.

Maybe there was a misconception between the Imam and TJ? If he's not actively making things up, he may actually believe a falsity somewhere?

Well from what I can gather, I think there was an initial deal for the burning books and moving of the mosque. From what I take on the evidence, I think its safe to say that there wasn't any mis-communication between the Imaan and Terry Jones.

It feels more like Terry Jones is trying to pressure the Imaan into moving the mosque and the Imaan is just stalling for time.

He probably believes that what he is doing is right and that it will succeed which might be the falsity your talking about. He probably doesn't consciously acknowledge the possible backlashes and consequences of his actions and misconceptions that it creates for the US as the dominating Hegemony.

I think he believes he is acting like or trying to act like a Martin Luther King Jr. figure. One man to stand up to adversity, no matter if everyone is against you, fight for what's right, that sort of thing. Although I'm not saying that he's ideologically poisoned.

I've read in Yahoo News(or other source) that some of the good townsfolk are even WILLING to do Quran Readings. Haha now I'd like to see the look on his face when he listens to it, he'd probably go Leonidas.

Yeah I've seen this on other forums and I'm fresh out of comprehensible opinion.

Not as big of a deal as people are making it be.

Flags and bibles are burned almost every day, so why should people care about the Koran?

As opposed to most Christians, most Muslims really care about their holy book. For instance, if it falls on the ground they get perturbed, where a Christian wouldn't really care that much.

Thus, a burning would affect them more than a similar treatment for the bible would a Christian.
In general though, I'm sure there are very devout Christians who would get riled up over a bible on the ground, and less-than-devout Muslims who could care less what happens to a copy of the Qur'an (Americanized spelling).

I am, by principal, against burning any book. Be it Mein Kampf or The Origin of Species, the Koran or the Bible, I think it wrong. Additionally, the reason for burning it is ♥♥♥♥ stupid. Why the hell do they care so much about a Mosque/Community center existing a few blocks away from Ground Zero? If anything it's a sign of respect to the dead, as opposed to the grave-pissing these twats perceive it to be.

I hope all the attention this thing is getting will drive people away from evangelicalism

So am I, the destruction of a book is the destruction of mental property. Be it beliefs or knowledge, a book is a window to the authors mind.

In my opinion a sign of respect would be to build a plaque with all the victims names and leaving the lot empty. And maybe selling some of the ruble, like what was done for the Berlin wall, in order to support the victims families.

Hehehe there should be a Bible Burning event on the same day, right next to the place where they plan to burn the Koran.

I agree, this would be halarious.

Well the reason why people are making this such a big deal is because Muslims, like duh said, culturally hold their holy texts and customs to a higher, much higher degree of respect then say a bible. Its more of a cultural difference that allows Terry Jones to have that advantage.

For example, during a war, the Muslim members of the enemy will stop to pray while, if they were facing against lets say the Mafia or a group who doesn't care, and they will be attacked. The difference is that while there are devout Christians, only about 3% are actually devout while the rest are not (this is from my guess-stamation). On the other hand, almost 100% of Muslims are devout. You could almost say that Islam is more religious than Christianity, and less violent. Islam doesn't even come close to Christianity in terms of number of people killed/tortured (Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades).

Everyone in the Islamic world knows about the Crusades and the Christians did and when, if you guys still remember, George W. Bush inadvertently said the "Crusade" during a speech about the operations in the Middle East, it sent a collective chill down the spines of the Islamic World because they knew what happened and were afraid that it was going to happen again. The rift between Islam and the rest of the "Western" world comes from a long time ago.

Every event, every person who is causing trouble like Terry Jones is, like Operation Iraqi Freedom, etc..., makes it more and more realistic to the Middle East and the Islamic world that another "Spanish Inquisition", another cluster of "Crusades" is going to happen again. That is why the pullout is so important.

While I agree with Phale about the burning of books, I disagree with Foil about the significance. Think of it like as if it was the US Constitution being burned.

By the by, we just upped the anty:

I'm with 3pok here, burning books is just plane retarded. And if you're really gonna burn a Koran, just try finding the ♥♥♥♥ responsible for the actually terrorism and enlist damn it, be a "good Christian" and go kill some "terrorists".

The irony of this man's ways is just overwhelming, his so called protest will only infuriate the extremist Muslims further.

All this discussion about two wrongly translated, Probably made up books. Which are coincidently about roughly the same thing. For ♥♥♥♥ sake just agree to believe in the same god, who goes by a heck of a lot of names.

For all those that feel personally insulted by this post, PM me with your objections and the reasons why I will end up in hell, and I'll gladly delete them. If you decide not to include that last bit, I will think it over.[/disclaimer]
