I just use caves to access ores.

Hundreds of coal and iron with easy and safe access!

Hundreds? Wtf kind of caves do you have?
Mine go through a mountain, or a little way in, with like 5 iron, or 10 coal.
Digging down from my house tends to get me more. Although I should spread out more than go down.

Some areas have different cave density to others.
If you try moving around a couple thousand blocks, you might find they become more or less common.

But then I get lost, and if I die, I lose everything :-(
House build over spawn point is the way to go. Or visible from spawn point.

I used a map viewer/editor once, but I felt dirty afterwards...

What Grif said.

I am at the point where I make homes while caving.

I got lucky, first time I played, I died, second time, I built me a nice house in a cliff.

Then I found some Lava.

Then it some how ended up on top of a spire on top of my mountain.

And then all of a sudden mobsters didn't bother me anymore.

Did you know you can make ladders? Easiest way to get deep (and die).

I don't accept anything less than awesome.

August 30: Back to work, finishing up survival mode multiplayer. Enemies will probably get added around here.

WE WILL HAVE A LITTLE LESS THAN A MONTH TO MAKE A FORTRESS TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THE MONSTERS!

Also from Notch's twitter it sounds like there will be claim flags, or other means by which admins can assign blocks to players.

When survival multiplayer comes out count me in on the action.

Same here. Nice communal village would be nice, until someone gets TNT.

The new large tree have really screwed me over. I can no longer jump on top and just dig straight down. And leaves take ages to disperse.
Papyrus is fun though. Horray for cheap fencing!

Does anyone else play on Peaceful?

Build it in the safe zone.

On the balance it looks like we'll be getting the server on Tuesday or Wednesday. I have work until EST 12PM (noon) and I usually have other odd jobs until about 4PM EST, so if it's released either day before then you will have to wait.

Also, one painful consideration, if the server takes a lot more bandwith than the previous iteration, we might have a problem. I only have a 10Mbps down 1Mbps up connection, and during the day most of that has to go toward the Voip that we use. I could set aside perhaps 300kbps but no more.

You know, i haven't decided to give Minecraft a good look until recently, and damn, it's much better than i expected. Playing the free Classic version makes me want the Alpha more and more. There's just something about stumbling across a large vein of minerals whilst exploring the natural caves...

Could someone explain to me the difference between the paid and free versions?
I might be wanting to buy this before the price rise.

From what i've gathered, the free version is just a creative toy, with an infinite amount of materials available. In the Alpha you have to mine for minerals, forge, make tools, and build accommodation.

I think.
