I had this one book that had something like that... Forgot where I Put it. Some people slash out this womens brain and wire it up to a battleship.

Long time no posts. Was lurking and saw this topic. Thought I'd post something.

Some books already mentioned in this thread that I like:
Alfred Bester's Stars my Destination
Frank Herbet's Dune
Greg Egan's Diaspora: One of my favorites. Really nice exploration of moving the human conciousness in to a computerized form.

Peter F Hamilton has also been mentioned. I've read the Night's dawn trilogy and the Pandora's star / Judas unchained -story. Really epic space opera. He managed to create very interesting and detailed worlds in both of them and then send them in to chaos in some epic wars. Really entertaining. Characters and some of the plot points, especially the ending of Night's dawn, are a little bit lacking, though.

Now for something else:
Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars-trilogy: I was surprised when I saw no mention of this. It's a very detailed and well written story of the colonization and terraforming of mars.

Stephen Baxter's Voyage: Alternative history. JFK survives his assassination and sets America's sights on Mars after the moon landings. The book tells a story spanning over 20 years from the moon landings to a mars landing in the 80's.

Gary Gibson's Stealing Light and Nova War: First two parts of a trilogy. Thrd part to be released very soon. Space Opera. Not the most awesome books in the world, but I enjoyed them. The aliens and their cultures are very well done.
