Re: Data's New Engine
Woo. So we all knew this was coming.
I think Data's going to rush CC, With good reason, and direct his focus on this. Too bad, but CC was his first game. How many people here wanted to spend years on their first game only to find out it was medicore? Better to wipe the board and learn your lesson. I like the look of this game, and if comparing this to early CC builds is any kind of measurement, this game could be epic BUT ONLY IF HE STICKS TO THE ART STYLE DEPICTED IN THE CONCEPT ART. CC has a style, and this game shouldn't steal it's glory. I'm really stressing the part about art style. That's critical.

Re: Data's New Engine
@lizard
The Concept or CC's art?
@Collective
He's also written that he'll be posting frequent updates in the dev log. I'm not harassing him or anything, I just think he'll lower his standards of "done" to a much lower point in order to clear the board ans start fresh on something new.
EDIT: Which, BTW is completely fine by me.

Rapidly hitting 'W' while in low gravity = spastic jellyfish mode this is so fun.

Re: Data's New Engine
Also it's not particularly helpful, you just end up as a very flat upside-down thing.

Re: Data's New Engine
I'm disliking how much the wheels deform. Feels like I'm driving atop plasticine rather than metal and rubber <_<

Re: Data's New Engine
Yeah, the player's vehicle is not a good place for that kind of deforming soft body physics. It makes it feel like you're driving a car made of play dough... play doe? play-do? Plato? Play Doh.

Re: Data's New Engine
Agreed. If the car's solid, then the controls seem more responsive. I'd be okay if the treads had a little bit, but not enough to effect your control.

Re: Data's New Engine
I think the main reason for the wheels deforming is that your car is actually supposed to break down over time. Data wrote: ...you can jump in and out of your ride, then run it into the ground until you find another one to replace it. I would assume it'll probably be toned down a bit, but this is likely an early version of how parts of the car will deform and break themselves over time.

Re: Data's New Engine
Yeah, the car breaking down and functioning less and less is potentially a perfectly fine gameplay aspect and all, but what I'm getting at is that squishing like Play Doh is a lame way to do it, both due to style and game-play implications.
A "Egh, wheels are too flat, it's not really worth using this anymore. I hope I find another before too long." B "Oh man it's on fire, it'll blow up next crash!" Which is more exciting, definite, and fun? And which is disappointing, uneventful, and tedious? Which of those sets of adjectives would you rather have describing your game?
I do like the soft body physics, and they did an excellent job making it work. All I'm saying is that I wish it weren't applied to the car.

Or at least not to the whole car.
