The ultimate RTS.

--DUH102 INTERVENTION--SpringRTS, more a game engine than a game persay.
Programmed by a Total Annihilation playing clan, the Swedish Yankspankers, the engine relies upon the mod (game) makers to provide content, and there are plenty of TA-based mods to go around. However, to legally play these mods you must own Total Annihilation.
There are several very well made mods that do not require a copy of TA, even including one mod that attempted to go commercial.
(apparently at time of this writing, AI is broken, but once it is fixed this will apply)
AI is controlled by plugins, both enemies and helper AIs. Several advanced learning AIs have been created that learn your playing style and how to most effectively make use of both units and terrain. Notables include AAI, RAI, and KAIK.
Maps are created from a composite of images and a metafile, namely a heightmap, texturemap, grassmap, metalmap, and featuremap. They can be very beautiful, if the maker takes his time, with such masterpieces as
General Cai's Revenge (something I pulled out of the forum, I expect there are much greater examples of mastery).
The physics are quite decent for an RTS; Units do not have a random chance of missing but aiming discrepancies that might throw an artillery round into your own territory if you're not careful.
When units explode, their parts fly everywhere, so that a nuclear strike looks positively beautiful.
Terrain deformation affects the passability of terrain, so that nuking a mountain road might create a crater that is impassible by less-agile vehicles while kbots may still pass, with difficulty.
All in all, well worth your time if you would like to take a look.
Here's some pics for clicks.
