Post Re: Sprite Help Thread
Well, I wanted to change the sprite for Shook's atomizer; mostly because it looks awkward. [No offence shook]
I know this can be improved:
[post script: the thingy which extends from the green barrel thingy is the foregrip, the green barrel itself is the mag. The black crescent is a shoulder rest (padding?)]

edit: i know i have to change offsets.

why would you say "i know this can be improved" that only implies that everything you post without that notification cannot be improved.

the light source should be higher
it's very disproportionate to normal actors
the colour ramp is bad
you're pillow shading a bit
use the outlines when you shade
shoulder padding is not shaded
the green on the main body doesn't contrast the body
the white bits at the end of the scope are unseemly

have an actor on the page so you can check to see if your sprite is too large

Er, didn't mean to sound that way with the "i know this can be improved", sorry.

Will try to improve.

edit: i also mean for this to be slightly larger.

edit2: how would one go about adding contrast to the green stripes.

edit3: Better or worse? :P

What Contrary means to say is that something can always be improved. There is always room for improvement. Always. Nothing is perfect.

You can always improve a piece/sprite. You just have to work at it.
This brings me to another point;
I'm no better than anyone, I can just go through the process of improving my picture faster. Meaning that you can do the same, it will just take you longer to do. So if you keep working on a picture, it'll get better and better.

Trust me, it's how I learned to sprite.
I made a picture and stuck with it. I kept improving it until I just was burnt out, and I was satisfied with the quality.
Some pictures have taken me hour, days, even weeks to completely finish.

As you start to do that, you'll get faster, and appear to be a better artist, when you just know how to improve you original, crappy art. :)

Basically, this is the best advice I can give anyone who wants to become a decent artist: Practice.

In closing, here's an edit.

I Caught that bit about the improving thing, once again sorry. :-(

I think i should compile a larger colour ramp and er, maybe try to draw concept first?
I'm looking at your gun edit and, you transformed it.

The back end was round, but you morphed it into an angle instead of a round edge; something that i didn't even think about.

I don't really know what to say, i tried AA the other day on a curved line, it turned out ok the first time; but i didn't even try to fix it.
I guess i should owe my terra-bad sprites to my laziness and general loss of interest after awhile of spriting.

Thanks for your help, i'll try again.

[P.S, i think i'll take this gun sprite and make something more epic then a atomizer resprite; just to say thanks]
[p.s.s Im going to try to sprite this BB gun i found in the basement, lets hope it turns out well.]

Well, next time you make something, stick with it. Don't make another picture when you feel like making more art, just try to improve what you have. IMO that's the best way to practice.

You still gotta know when to put it down and work on something else though.

Gave the body sprite a little more shape to it. Also made hands and feet, and softened the outlines on all sprites. The body still isn't textured quite like the head though, I need to work on that and then re-texture the limbs too.

The body and arms/legs look much nicer.
The hands desperately want outlining.

The feet look goofy, hideously so. I appreciate the effort to stray from the norm, but not like that, I think.
Perhaps if you removed the curvy 'flares' at the edges, then I think it would look a lot nicer.

Edit:
And also a touch more outlining on the jetpack, too.

@CC I really like the head. I can't really comment on the torso and limbs because you said you are going to texture it which will change everything. The only thing I can think of which might still be applicable after you change everything is that you have to watch that you are going up the colour ramp slowly; your shoulders' highlights look like bright decals rather than shine. And your arms are kinda thin.

CC48: I love the head as well, but the body is just a tad too large (unless that's what you're going for). I count him 8 pixels too high assuming the mockup is the desired goal.

The shading is really good- you just need more contrast.

Just give it a quick recolour.

Sure. Anything I've ever done is up for grabs.

What you've done with this is good, I really hope you'll try again.

No it's just a bit bland. Try to add some details.
