Joking btw

@jj. You were shading well with the other thing; do the same but on a smaller scale.

I meant shade the same as the first apple, but have it a closer size tot the second. Bombs looks... Really good, actually. I'd say outlines, but it's dark enough so it looks good.

That actually made me laugh out loud, in real life.

Thank you! I really appreciate that.

I feel the need to state that i think this thread is good. With that out of the way, if one of you is feeling particularly bored, could you perhaps take a look at these sprites? I'm decently satisfied with them myself, but i know there's room for improvement, i just don't know how to do it. :-o

I put 'em in an image file; please do that from now on. It would be alright if it was just me, but I really want everyone to give imput and it's really inconvenient if they have to download, install, and extract each time.

I think that right now your sprites fit in really well with Vanilla Cortex Command- are you interested in maintaining that style or do you want to jump into MLCish glossy high colour count style as I have been trying to?

In any case, the actually composition of your sprites is always important, and thankfully you are doing quite well despite a few issues.

The main area of improvement would be the blue rifle and the orange cannon's balance issues. Such big guns should be pretty heavy, and everyone knows it is is easier to life things closer to their center of mass. These two guns have the trigger at almost the very end of the weapon- even if the holder was very strong it would put an illogical amount of stress on the gun. I suggest adding a larger stock and shortening the overall barrel length as well as adding obvious foregrips as far down the gun as the Coalition's stubby little arms will let you. I think big guns are cool too but it's subconsciously uncomfortable when you see something that doesn't quite click like that. You could do what Lowest is doing know and make very wide guns- that looks good and achieves a similar effect. The shading is great on both those, however.

The grey and green guns are a little bland right now. You have three parallel, touching lines going unimpeded for almost twenty pixels. Adding some sort of panel or circular energy pack or something would benefit it greatly. The pistol is a little funky; I think you went a little overbord with the varying outline shades. You could also make the green a darker shade when it is part of the outline.

Bat looks good. Maybe you could try using more shades or dithering for texture if you're feeling adventurous.

The launcher is good and the blue pistol is my favourite. You should be doing what you did with the yellow bits on that pistol in other places as well. You could also make the outline at the top of the zooka lighter than the outline at the bottom; as you did with all your other guns.

General things. Don't be afraid to add a couple more colours, just make sure you use them and they contrast well enough to be seen. In the same way some of the colours you are using are almost indistinguishable from each other, even when zoomed in 8x. If you can barely tell the difference zoomed in, it won't do anything when zoomed out. Remember to constantly zoom out because things look a lot different with different magnifications.

I can do the shiny on some of them later if you really want, but I think you are already a good spriter and will understand what I am saying. A quick edit on the back so I won't feel like I'm cheating you too much.

Don't be afraid to use cold colors (blue n such) for dark colors and warm colors (reddish ones) for highlights.
And contrast isn't what you should be afraid to use. Softer things stick out less and sharper things stick out more.

Yes it does look better- on top of the more proprtionate size the shape in now better. You still need to put it in palette and use outlines of some sort. I attached a comparison.

And... I really don't know how you could miss the uploader.

Right, sorry 'bout that. I guess i should've put them all on a sheet to begin with. >.>

Also, nice long useful post yummy. You're right about the big guns appearing unbalanced, though this is somewhat offset by the way they're held, which is with their center of mass close to the torso. I'll see if i can make them look a bit more "comfy", though. As for my style of spriting, i'm not really sure. I guess i'd like them to fit well with the vanilla sprites, as i rarely make my own actors to use the guns.

Also, during the writing of this post, i tried improving a bit on the gray/green guns, and gave the gazooka a little touchup on the outlines. I'm not really sure if i like the non-glowy look on the gray/green guns, so i might change that soon. For now, bedtime.

Post Re: Sprite Help Thread
Trying out a bit of actor modding after messing around in weapon modding.
Based on a sprite I made, on the left.

Main concerns are: getting it to fit in bunkers when the helmet attachable is added, figuring out how to make its feet stay on the ground instead of bouncing around on top of it.

Currently uses the Robot 1 as a base, but I intend to deviate once I get everything working.

Hello fellow Cortexers, this sprite I need opinions at is meant to be a bolt-action rifle from the first world war. Opinions, suggestions, criticism, all accepted.

@Natti: There isn't much you can do for a gun as far as art goes, so if you want to practice your pixelling I recommend trying slightly larger objects. Still, in general, you want to make the top a bit lighter on the top and a bit darker on the bottom, as the bottom of the sprite won't point upwards while being used.

(My art program automatically saves as PNG, so it's probably out of palette, but you get the idea.)

Umm, sorry, I already improved (read: made it again from a scratch) the sprite. Here's the new one:
