The problem with glows is that they lag the game more and more the larger the glow sprite is. Even a lot of smaller glows that cover the same area don't lag as much as big glows. I don't know if it's an exponential relation, but it sure seems that way.

But it can get to a point where lots of small glows FAR out-rape a few big glows.

I think that mostly happens when they overlap. But then again, I don't actually check these facts, I just spew them.

Scenario:
Let's say that I have a bomb that explodes into 100 MOPixels, 50 which have YellowSmall.bmp and 50 that have YellowBig.bmp. Then, compare that with my Nova Bomb, which only has a few glows (although a few take up the whole screen). The lag from the 100 pixel bomb would be higher than from my bomb with few but extremely massive glows.

The Gish has a thing like this, with light sources and shadows. Very nice.

maby if you made like 18 different angle glows you could make a basic spotlight.
