If it is not, then they might not be real, so there opinion does not matter. Thats just one example. Where would the consequences come from? From beings outside your mind that you assume, because you are sentient, are also sentient. Unless you believe in a higher power, in which case either reality would be the same, since in "reality" the higher power would be god or w/e and in the "fake reality" would be the guy behind the program. The point is, whether you're interacting with nonsentient created entities in a "fake reality", or assumed to be sentient entities in "reality", you cannot tell and will never be able to tell unless someone higher up comes up and tells you. In which case you would know that you're in "fake" reality and you probably will wish you hadn't asked because everything you knew was wrong.

Replace all instances of the word "computer" in my above rant with "god" and you get roughly the same thing. It's just a more powerful computer. So let's take my original example. Let's say a civilization makes a moon-sized computer that can render earth in realtime. Now let's say a thousand years later they finally perfect shrinking that computer (or terminals to that computer) down to a laptop-sized unit. Then let's say market forces ensured that every single member of 4chan could pick up one of these planet-simulating laptops for $5 from the corner store. Or maybe it's available for digital distribution on Steam. weasel wrote: maybe it's available for digital distribution on Steam.
it's called Garry's mod. Also, I would like to point out another amusing bit. Star-trek. How many times did something ♥♥♥♥ up on the holodeck? we had a guy that gets turned super-human-smart, takes control of the entire ship. there was that episode where, what was it, super-villains to compete with data as sherlock holmes, attempt to escape the holodeck to take controll of the real universe while trapping data inside. oh, or the episode where worf and his son go in the holodeck to be in the wild-west, and suddenly every character is replaced with data, because of like, a power-surge. oh, and the one where troy's mom falls in love with the one hologram... oh, and lets not forget when some random super-race captured picard, made a holodeck, and pretended to be the romulans that captured him. I think this is like that. being on a holodeck, and not knowing your in a holodeck, and then finding out everything you know is a lie? what would you do? you'd try to escape. Lets say now that, you willingly entered the holodeck. what you do, and how you act inside it, would not be the same as outside, after all, consequences. I think in terms of 'how would we act if we lived in a fake world, and it was proven to be fake', I think would be the same as 'you live on a prison planet', 'soylent green is made of people', and generally avoiding carousel, and trying to get out of the city. It's the same idea as the island, even Fahrenheit 451. If you want to go into conspiracy, you have the new world order, and the builderburg group. Its the same idea. It might be reality itself, It might be a set of laws, a psychotic society, or being held captive. when you realize it's happened, or that it always has been that way, the goal always becomes to escape. In fiction, characters would usually snap, and throw away all regards to what they new. This is much the same. In fact, in any representation of this idea, I think the simplest question is, "would people really, and permanently act differently if they've seen the FNORDs?" While yes, it is entertaining to humor the idea of a fictional world, I don't think we can truly believe in that, enough to react, until we have seen concrete evidence of it, which, in a system as you suggest, designed as a prison, would theoretically have no such evidence within it. So until we find easter eggs, back doors, or gods build-notes, I don't think we can truly and accurately answer this question. Although it is fun to talk about.

Re: Simulated reality
I think that nothing in this topic so far makes any sense, because we are just explaining things we don't know in terms we think don't actually exist. Paradox, START. And that's why I'm Agnostic. (Everything can or cannot be true, and pretty much everything is unknown or made up)

Re: Simulated reality
Well I think when someone dies and gets revived like a minute later they begin saying that they saw a light and I'm guessing that its the person opening their eyes from a half an hours worth of sitting in a seat getting this information into your mind disconnected and being killed is like the place that you are at had a small glitch and their like oh sorry this is just a minor inconvenience and within seconds they get you back in this reality reviving your current character and going back to normal.

Re: Simulated reality
Well, few things that i think is ironic is we were simulated. - We play simulators, even though we are already being simulated. - We could just be characters in a very awesome version of Garry's Mod - In this awesome version of Garry's mod, we create another Garry's Mod. Things i think: - If we were simulated, i hope the person who runs the simulator doesn't hurt me. - could 2012 be some kind of mod that simply causes us to panic for the enjoyment of the gamer? - And they possibly also can decide how 2012 happens.

Re: Simulated reality
If we've been living in a simulated reality our whole lives, what would it change? Killing someone still makes them disappear off of the face of the earth. Multiple entities exist, so being respectful to one another still matters. Physics hasn't changed. Basically: It doesn't matter, so don't worry about it.

Re: Simulated reality
I shall agree with Twwig and MLC now. Why? Why worry? The only fear of living in a fake world, is the possibility of malicious intent, which this world has more than enough of. and that said, who amongst us (the human race, not the forums), has the power to escape? I don't think anyone has, except maybe people who disappear and are never found again, but even then I doubt it, considering the kinds of people who disappear.
besides, there opinions made me lol.

It's the MIB that come and take the smartest of the smart away and make them into the AIs of their ships.

Hey, an article on this very issue! Now to find the console... EDIT: On second thought, that goal along with my previously stated plea for some cheats/hax.

Interesting. When i was younger i used to contemplate if there was anything outside my own mind. Solipsism is the word.

I notice a very distinct lact of any possibility of "simulated minds" interacting with a real world. you know, AI. in (1) (2) and (3) there is no real mention of such. aside from that, that article was interesting...ish...

Re: Simulated reality
"How about you take the red pill and I'll show you just how far your rabbit hole goes." -- A strange perception of reality, that's the common-trait. What's true and what's not is a decision that only oneself can distinguish. For example, when one is punched, they flinch, feel pain, and there's some type of reaction. What's fake about this situation? When you jump into a cold lake, do you think your true body to be sitting in a tube somewhere? If the fears are about simulation, about the world being fake, I respond with a simple thought. Simulations are usually conducted in a controlled environment, and as such, why would you be granted to ability to realize that it's not real? Or perhaps you'd believe, in this virtual simulation, that your thoughts themselves are 'real'. Everybody seems to think of a Matrix-type scenario whenever this topic is brought up. Reality is based on your perspectives and emotions, and what you understand about them.
