C'mon, there's a big locked topic confirmed by Data himself that there will be no online play. Now people have managed to do it via remote assistance or hamachi, but it's duct tape and spit at best.

It'll never happen. At least not for the next three years. I think that possibly, maybe, computing power and the speed of the internet will have grown to the point where this kind of stuff works.

BUT NOT NOW.

I might let this mature a bit before downloading, but... That link is tempting.

Couldn't an online mode be implemented in theory like minecraft do theirs? Like... a dedicated server pack that hosts the server and then players could just join it and play it off the server? Have it download mods that a player hasn't got and stuff?

I mean it'd probably take great resources to run but I mean... that's what servers are capable of. Just something that has been lurking in my head. I mean I haven't really taken a look at what resources CC takes up while running but if it can run standalone surely a server would manage to make it multiplayer? o.O

I mean, we have some real coding gods amongst us. I envy anyone that can LUA as good as you guys because I still haven’t been able to grasp it myself yet. I just don’t get why the community just doesn’t pull together for a few months to make this sort of thing a reality. :-(

No. The problem here aren't the resources on a server or a local computer. The problem is keeping every damn pixel synced with the other player. Remember the fact that CC has per-pixel physics in the terrain.

And no, we don't have coding gods amongst us.

And for that you'd need a T3 going from one player's computer to the other if you wanted anything more than 2 players.

Technique that has been said by many people, including me:

You can have one computer be "host" and another or multiple computers be "guests." The "host" does ALL physics calculations and sends screen frames to the guests so they can see stuff. The only thing the guest computers do is send control input data, like pressing the Fire button.

No servers or super computers required. Just a lot of scripting and maybe an external program.

Yeah, that could realistically work with the average player's hardware, but it's not very fair to the client player that they have to deal with more lag, some of which might also throw off their inputs, depending on how you set up their external interfacing with the game.

As you can see, that has already been established.

It has also been established that it is jury rigged AT BEST, and only works over a LAN.

If you think about it, Online play for CC wouldn't be that much fun. You would most likely get some asshat who hacks it or drops 3 nukes right away and ruin everything... Allowing it connection to the internet would be opening the portal to the trolls and retards even more.

It's interesting that you did this now, because last night I was accepted into the OnLive Beta program.
I can't say anything about it because of the NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) other than that I got in and that it is real.

Not April Fools btw.

OnLive is a game service that purports to be able to stream video and sound to your computer from their special servers and input from your computer to their servers fast enough to run games. The biggest question everyone has is whether or not it can do it to run FPSs and such that require twitch reactions.
