But cave-ins are part of the fun, you have to plan around them and get involved in the designation process...
Ah well. We need some exported images of the map at some point gentlemen (esc->export images style), remember to convert them to .png

Well Duh, here is the save. Please note that this fortress has got a bucketful of problems, no wood, too little beds, half a glass/alunite tower, an unfinished gigantic shaft and a ton of cave-ins. It has also got very good glass/ore making operations, though.

Frankly, I'm too exhausted to make a good story for this one right now. I intended to go all Andrew Ryan like and build an underwater glass/brass fortress, but got lazy with designating dig zones and made one helluva mess. If the next rulers can finish the big shaft, build a city inside it and then flood the whole thing, I would be deeply grateful. Or you could just turn this into a new BoatMurdered, for all I care. Just have fun!

Let's get this train wreck rolling! I'll see what I can do about rectifying those problems.

Yo dawgs I made a tileset.
And a colourtable, but its a WIP based on one I found on the net, and harms readability a little in some cases.

Why am I ALWAYS the one to bury people?
Alpha, you died in a cave-in that I had to let happen because you miners got stuck on pillars of nothing in the middle of the megaproject (which I am continuing areku, never fear).
Worry not, I shall decorate your burial chamber with the best of glass sculpture.

Yeah, I was kinda expecting that to happen. Erratic digging patterns just make me mad. :x

At any rate, people, who would be interested in taking the turns after Alpha's? This is a community fortress, so we need more than two players. Really, anyone can enter, you don't need to be good at it. (But if you are, I invite you once again. :P )

to make caveins that _dont_ kill everyone, build a support and then hook it up to a lever. when you pull the lever, the support drops out. it's pretty easy to not kill dwarves this way.

But the caveins are not intentional: they happen because the miners wander around like crazy digging where they shouldn't when you give them too big designations. If I wanted a cave-in, though, I would be sure to use the method you described.

I'm using a pattern of a box with vertical strips, it works quite well for the portions of solid rock left. The patchy remnants stubbornly leave behind floating floor attached by strands.

EDIT: There, finished your damn pit >:[
Took me an entire season and the life of Alpha and a donkey I didn't care about but I FINISHED THE DAMN THING.

Going to make myself a housetower in there and a tunnel to it, but leave the flooding to later when people have made their happy places.

EDIT2: VisualFortress shot for those who want some scale.

EDIT3: I also just got married to some provincial. Sheesh, you'd think I have better taste. To make the match more worthwhile, I trained him up in smithing. That's a more fitting husband.

I know, however that method means you can just crash each level of floor down after mining it out, rather than channelling. Ramping also works when you want to designate many levels, but it's safer to just do it 1 zlevel at a time. Good to hear it's done though, and I laughed at the marriage comment.

Dunno, he's (Atir Luritathel) been in the forge so I haven't seen him in a while.

In other news, I'm also now the mayor. And I churn out glass crafts like a boss.

YES! YEEESH!

...Wait, did you remove the non ramp-marked squares in the middle of the pit? I was gonna build an underground farming area there. I guess you'll have to start over.

(The last part was a joke, in case you didn't get it. But I will still miss my underground farm. :( )

Adding a farming area is trivial, consider it made. It's damn hard to get the dwarves to dump things from the pit though, and somehow we need to get rid of ~10000 lumps of stone to speed things up. Too bad we don't have a bottomless pit.
