I know Pixen works for .bmp files and you can import palettes and whatnot.

If you can assign an indexed color palette to the image, and save it as 8bit, then you'll be cool.

For glows. Normal Cortex sprites are 8bit. 8 bits, or a byte, goes from 0 to 255, or 256 colors.

Some guy just told me it was 24. So it's 8 bit? You sure?

I think I had Pixen, but there was some problems. I forgot... Lemme go try it out again.

Edit: PXLR (http://www.pixlr.com/editor/) is a free, web-based editor. It works as well :D But I still want Pixelmator.

Edit: Right! For glows... Ignore the first 2 lines...

What do you need besides paint? I may be ignorant, but all I use is the colour chooser tool, and the pencil.

CC sprites are 256 colors with a custom palette. The sprite HAS to be in this palette or it will look weird in game. A common method of converting a sprite to the right palette is to paste your sprite over a base.rte sprite in Paint. I don't know if a similar method exists for macs

Actually, this was because people didn't understand that CC used 256 color bitmaps. Opening the palette image(which is a 256 color bitmap) in paint was just a bass ackwards way of doing save as > 256 color bitmap.
I've been trying to tell people this for years.
