I know it's not exactly the holy grail of pixel art.

Try to have outlines that are darker variants of the color inside instead of black.
Add texture, not just like camo or beveling, but stuff like welds and such.

And rivets.

The hand looks really odd but I guess it's still in the WIP state...Otherwise it looks badass. I would suggest using a sharper brush.

2d retro adventure game concept. :o

I think you should drop the grey on the characters.

Plain aliased black always look better.

Maybe highlight some parts of them? Like someone's boots are brown, someone has a red tie or headband, etc.

Thanks for the ideas guys, if I did go through with this I would likely make a full animation sheet for several characters. These are sort of just place-holders until then though. The game is sort of a backwards Louis and Clark Expedition by yourself. Tilesets being around 300 feet in ingame length with at least a hundred tilesets all hand drawn with no pre-made tiles. Tilesets would range from coastlines to deep forests to mountains to desert and maybe even a mineshaft or two.

looks very nice and sounds like you have the same idea as me for tiled games, too generic and repeating, I'm currently developing an engine that's similarly 'free-tiled' because I think games where the tiles are invisible are better grapohically

heh, I was going to post this before I read geti's reply.

working on a game I should have made in the TIGsource assemblee competition, but after a couple of days briefly working on it I decided to do some work on my main project instead, because I thought it would be unfair on my friend to just leave the main project and begin working on a different game with the amount of time I hadn't even touched the main project. in the actual game all I need to do is code attacks, enemies, moving to new maps and inventory and the the game is pretty much done and I may post it in the gaming sub-forum

unfortunately it looks nowhere near as good as geti's, at least I can claim this is just a very small side project.

still looks cool, i'm just too lazy to do the whole 2x pixel effect for mine, though it'd likely speed it up a lot <_<
What's the premise of the game? looks rpgish. could be delicious with paralax backgrounds in the visual style of jumper 3 but with more vegetation.

Robolee, have you played the game The Great Dungeon in the Sky (the second one I think). Cos those sprites look quite a bit like the ones from that game. Just saying
