Re: Dwarf Fortress - It's about time there's a thread
Oh, Dwarf Fortress. DRFF is always pointing me the best indie games. And I love this one. Except I'm really bad at it, so it usually ends up with a lot of Fun. (You know what I mean) Yesterday, I was handling a pretty prosperous fortress, when one of my diggers accidentally opened a hole in the ceiling. Right under a river. I managed to get everyone outside before the place flooded entirely... except for my leader, who was trapped in his sealed room on the lowest floor. And then Carp started flowing through the hole, infesting my whole fortress. I had no choice but to abandon it (and my leaderdwarf) forever.
...Later on, when I got back there on Adventure Mode, the place where it had been had been renamed "Tormenthells the Distorted Vessel of Disemboweling". o.0

Miners don't accidentally flood your fortress. You can only blame yourself.

well you say he opened a hole in the ceiling? the only thing I can think of is that it was probably a cave-in.

Unless you have to span more than 2 tile hallways, I prefer doors. Faster working and cheaper to build.

Yeah, but with floodgates you can make fancy remote-controlled traps to drown all those pesky goblins.

Doors can be linked to levers too. Very useful things, doors. Right now I'm working on making a pressurized flood trap. Should be quite fun, in both senses of the word.

These fudging immigrants are useless. What do I do with them? And to make my day better, one of the metalsmiths got possessed right after they arrived. Fan-Freaking-tastic.

What do I do with them? 1- build channels around a square area on the surface, except for a single floor tile; 2- under that square, build a huge pit, starting directly under the surface and ending at least 10 floors down; 3- Put all the migrants in the military and station their squads in the middle of that square in the surface; 4- Tell one of your miners to sever the last rock tile that connects the square to the wall; 5- Sit back and enjoy the fun (or maybe Fun) as those poor dwarves, along with anything and everything that was over the square, plummet instantly into the abyss. Oh yeah. Surprisingly, most dwarves usually survive such falls without too many injuries, so you might ocasionally want to throw some food and booze into the pit, so that the stranded don't starve to death. They may even build a prosperous city of their own, if guided properly. If that is too much work, just channel some lava into the pit. (For bonus points, make sure that the lava is swarming with fire imps.) As for the possessed dude, just give him anything he wants, and he'll eventually spit out a magical artifact worth a ton of money.

Then assign them to train up some skills. Can never have too many trained dwarves. Also, military. Great way to chuck peasant dwarves.

For immigrants: Peasants get Military/Fortress Guard-ised Farmer jobs get Butchery/Tanning/Leatherworking/Field farming/cooking/brewing Ect ect... As I only have 2 workshops of each kind, they spend a lot of time moving things from one place to another.
