Personal mods. I have a question.
Is it illegal for me to make edits of any user made mod(s)' data or any of the data included when you first install CC and ONLY use it for personal use?

No. In fact, I don't think it's illegal even if you put it up for public use. Just a real big ♥♥♥♥ move.
You can use any of the basegame data however the heck you want.

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
If you're using the stuff that comes with the game, it's generally regarded as perfectly fine. Try not to publicly release things like simple reskins, but nobody is going to ban or sue you. If you use somebody else's mod, it's best to check with them beforehand before you release it publicly. However, if you're planning on keeping this to yourself, do whatever you like. Nobody's going to stop you.

It's about the use of someone's mod for public purposes. You can do whatever the hell you want with any mod as long as you keep it to yourself/release it only with the permission of the original author.

So, if someone has a CC-BY-NC-SA license at the top of their mod topic (like I believe all of mine do), that means they release their code and sprites to the public with the usage conditions stated in those clauses of the license, same thing with GPL, etc.

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
It would be illegal to modify if it had DRM. Which no mods have yet. Time to fix that situation.

Yes, DRM for a $20 indie game's user-made modifications that will never have cash value. Are you just trying to be an ♥♥♥hole to future modmakers on purpose?

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
No, it just means that peaple wont be able to Release their editted versions of mods anymore, though im sure there is. Most people wont anyways, they'd just get flamed to their deaths. Besides, people can edit other people's mods, its just not SMART to release them. Its like you taking numgun's AAL and reskinning it. Unless the sprites were better then numgun's original Sprite, you will get flamed to no end if you release it.

mail2345 wrote: It would be illegal to modify if it had DRM. Not release. Modify. Which means no more tweaking (i.e. something pretty much everyone does). It's already illegal(ish) to release a modified version of a mod made by someone else IF it was originally released under a license. Which was pretty much the whole point of this thread.

My question is, how would we know if he even changed the gold cost or fire rate of a mod or something?

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
You don't know. You can't know. It would be illegal, but no one would be able to stop someone from altering it. Just like currently no one can stop someone from taking a mod from here and posting it as their own on another CC fan forum.

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
I oppose DRM on principle. It helps nothing and only frustrates users. It has not helped the music industry, has not helped the game industry, and has not helped the movie industry. Why the hell would it do anything for us? Someone would simply crack whatever DRM you put on it and you'd have a lot of bad feelings over no gain. And, we would be stifling the education of the new generation of modders, which is perhaps the most important point of all I raised.
Duh102's verdict: Bad Idea

Re: Personal mods. I have a question.
That, and developing DRM eats up time and money that could be better put to use improving the game. *glares accusingly at EA Games, even though they are just publishers*
