Uh, when you buy into this product, you are contributing to (and by association: funding for) future development of the game.

Sounds like an investment to me.

No guy, we're not funding a product, we're simply purchasing it. I'm pretty sure we only have the right to complain if the product did not meet it's claims. I don't think Data has claimed anything but unlimited skirmish and a buttload of "maybes".

You can't buy a carrot and complain because it does not fly or fire laser sharks. If you're complaining that skirmish cuts out and sends you back to the menu screen after 10 minutes you could say something about that. In fact, on the occasions I've left CC on for multiple hours it's died. You guys could make threads and bother Data about that, maybe.

You can buy a carrot and expect it to taste the same as every other carrot you've ever eaten though.
I expect my games to run without crashing for no reason, or use my graphics card, or...
etc etc.

Buying the game now:

which will get you all updates of Cortex Command up to and including the full campaign if and when it is completed.

(emphasis added)

Also, buying now gets you the game for a significant discount off the end-sale price.

That said, the more money Data gets the more motivated he will be to make that if turn into a when. Vote with your dollars!

Purchasers of the game can, therefore, be construed as being supporters of the game. By giving money you allow for the future development of the game. This does not mean you are an investor or have some sort of level of entitlement. Payment status does not influence the amount of impact your opinion carries or how weighted your complaints or concerns will be.

Of course, if every person who buys the game has their mom explode immediately after installation, it is in our best interests to react appropriately and make the necessary changes to continue selling the product with good reviews. Not obligated to, of course, but definitely well worth our time. You might want to check out the demo before purchasing if you are unsure on whether your mom will explode or not (and other issues that may arise).

That's not cool Weasel, my mother died that way after I installed Roller Coaster Tycoon.

It never will, a lot of other 2D games don't and never will, chill out and wait for him to optimise if you get lag, or take steps yourself (turn off huge mods if you arent using them, fiddle with settings.ini, play smaller maps with less bots, etc) rather than qqing about your undoubtably expensive GPU never, ever being used for anything but actually drawing stuff to the screen.

That said, CC ran like A ♥♥♥♥ STALLION ON CRACK WITH ROCKET BOOTS on my friends new computer. Will find out what his processor is, it loaded fresh installed vanilla in 3 seconds first time.
About as good as it worked on my computer (Phenom II 720 BE) before my brother got ahold of the internet and 80GB of crap turned up <_<

EDIT: Adding to the topic at large
The editors are a godsend for what they're used for. Gib editor allows you to place gibs properly, scene editor lets you save that huge base you spent a million hours on and then realised you couldnt save, and the actor viewer lets you reload stuff in game. Being able to play for more than 6 minutes is pretty good too. Overall, I'd say worth it, as long as you plan on/are already getting into modding, and can deal with long waits.

I'd say it's worth it for the massive epic skirmishes and the mission type mods alone. I don't really use the editors.

They don't use a graphics card? Could explain why I could run this game pretty good. :P

They call that a "feature".
