They are not like polearms. They are used in completely different ways. Look up videos if you want.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
I have to agree with hyper. While a scythe is a very cool weapon, along with all the I'M DA REAPERZ thing, it is clumsy to use and hard to keep sharp, not to mention that it would become totally useless if any zombie managed to get close enough to you.
I'd rather go with the hunting shotgun/machete combo, with a small tomahawk axe just in case.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
The scythe would be for small one-on-one fights with zombies, I would obviously have a better weapon for larger amounts. But one zombie ain't much of a threat, which means I have room for fun. Therefore, Ima have to scythify that fool.

No, you will die. Areku wrote: I'd rather go with the hunting shotgun/machete combo, with a small tomahawk axe just in case. Indeed. Carry some slugs as well and you're good to go.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
Dude, if I can't take a single zombie, when I have a scythe, I'm screwed no matter what. So your "no, you'd die" argument doesn't really make much of a difference for a one-on-one setting.

With scythes you can give a swift chop to the neck, and it isn't hard to carry in buildings. More of a novelty item but it would work fine.

More of a novelty item but it would work fine. except they aren't designed for cutting things at the angle you would have to combat a human figure in and it would be a pain to carry in a building. if you're using a traditional wooden scythe, they weigh quite a bit. sure, you might get a good stab, or possibly a cut in, but then your scythe is potentially stuck in a zombie which is coming towards you. War scythes are more practical for melees, as they are modified to act as pole arms with the blade facing in the direction of cutting, but a standard scythe... no ♥♥♥♥ way would I want one in this situation. You might survive a one on one if you were lucky, but you'd be much better off with a machete. If you want the extra sharpness (scythes are ♥♥♥♥ sharp) then sharpen your machete more O_o If you're just going for the novelty, sure, go for it, but you have to realise you're using a "weapon" designed to cut grass and reap crops, not kill people effectively. It'll inflict some amazing stab wounds, but the logistics of using it as a weapon are pretty terrible due to the angle the blade is at.

Anything really heavy and you'll be tired from swinging it too quickly to be of any use. Machete sounds good, but really anything light would work well.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
Are the zombies in question rotted and/or atrophied enough for staves or bokken to be effective? They're fairly light and could double as supports due to them essentially being a stick. Probably easy to maintain too - no sharpening really needed.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
In terms of practicality, a woodcutting axe would probably be my new primary choice, followed by katana. Both of them are readily available, and would be fairly effective. For a ranged weapon, in all honesty, I would prefer a bow. I'm a pretty ♥♥♥♥ shot with any kind of gun, but I can shoot well with a bow, and bows have insane lethality, if you can hit someone.

i guess a bow is nice if you have aim with it, and the ammo is re-usable. only problem i see is the rate of fire against an onslaught.

His "katana" would break, or get stuck in bone.

Re: (now a zombie killing effectiveness thread)
Well, actually, the Japanese suicide charges of WW2 were surprisingly effective once they reached enemy lines, and those troopers had rifles to block the katanas with. Rifles are harder than bone, and the katans didn't get stuck, is my point. In the end, though, I think all you'd really need would be a suit of armor. It can be made out of whatever the hell you like, as long as it's at least a strong plastic, and the zombies will never bite through it. Fiberglass would be a good option, with padding and crap. You'll most likely get tired quickly, but, y'know, invincible. Then you can pick up a scythe or whatever the hell you want. Emphasis on the scythe if you make the helmet's face in the shape of a skull and throw Ben's black cloak over it.
