I believe you mean thunderbolt

also, according to actual a-10 pilots the GAU's pretty ♥♥♥♥ accurate

the point wasn't that it is an "inaccurate platform" the point was that it was designed to kill lines of ♥♥♥♥ tanks storming across europe

cold war broskis

edit: and you can't put it on an MBT because it's like thirty feet long

it's not going to be any less accurate (on the first seven shots) than any other 30mm weapon, and larger calibers are typically more accurate, not less

I admit that mistyping "Thunderbolt" was pretty stupid. :P

Not all variants of the GAU are. the GAU-12 (Equilizer) is 2m long and the GAU-8 is 3 m long.

If memory serves the GAU-8 is accurate to approx. 1 km, while the Rheinmetal (sp?) 120 mm is accurate to approx. 8 km.

yes

it's A FOUR TIMES LARGER BARREL

that means higher muzzle velocity and therefore less time in flight to be affected by destabilizing factors

also a higher mass round, which gives it more forward inertia.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... Type_1.jpg

this, by the way, is not 3m

PS: when you're firing seventy seven and a half pound hand grenades per second "accuracy" becomes a moot point; if you are pointed in the rough direction of a target ♥♥♥♥ is going to explode

edit: tell you what
when you can hit something 1 km away with a second long burst from a gun mounted inside the plane you are flying the flying gun you are piloting at 350 knots two hundred feet off the deck in combat airspace while trying to avoid friendly fire

you come and talk to me about inaccurate platforms.
hitting something 20km away with a piece of artillery sitting on a nice cozy hill in the middle of nowhere is a hell of a lot less impressive

If I recall correctly the Gau-8 also only needs a average of seven or eight direct hits to take out most MBTs which is pretty damn impressive in itself. But each second burst is 70 rounds within a radius of 8 meters at 1 kilometer distance.

Seven or eight hits, of which only a third of the rounds are DU penetrators = yeah, it's accurate

NO NO NO!!!!!! You people have it all wrong. Imagine holding that thing in your hands during a zombie apocalypse. Damn that would rock.
*edit* i mean the shotgun gatling gun not the air gun b.c to fire that youd need a plane and if i was on a plane during the zombie apocalypse i would fly the hell away

Okay, let's run a hypothetical with you against a zombie horde with this.
*Attempts to fire gun*
*Falls over/breaks shoulder, about 2 zombies dead if you're extremely lucky*
*Repeat until killed by zombies*

Alternatively:
*Attempts to pick up gun*
*Fail*
*Repeat until killed by zombies*

It would not do anything similar to rock unless you had something very heavy to mount it on.

If you shoot while kneeling or lying down that wouldn't be much of a problem.

Lying/crouching down you'd, A, still break something, B, be pretty much unable to aim, C, take ages to turn.

And D, shotguns are ♥♥♥♥ against zombies. You'd just lure more to the area with the gunshots, until you are overwhelmed.

agreed. zombies would tear you apart. you want silent precision headshots (a silenced .22 rim-fire rifle is cheap and to the extreme in quiet.)when it comes to zombies. the only useful thing i could think of for this would be a mounted close range hit and run, which in that case explosive launchers would still be better. I think this gun would be mostly for fun at best really.

No. Just no. Silencers are actually crap when it comes to really silencing weapons. Especially inside buildings/at short range.

If you want to be silent you either use a bow or something or actually don't fight them at all
