I don't get it. You can't hold a gatling gun in hand - you need a tripod or something, right? What good would a stationary short range gun be?

It wouldn't, that's the whole point. Those are only used for anti-missile/aircraft defense.

Could you repeat the part where you explain why it wouldn't need a tripod? I don't profess to know much about firearms, but I'm pretty sure a Gatling anything has too much kick to be held in hand.

... WAT. I just said that that's why it would be useless: it can't be used unmounted, and mounted it's utterly useless, since good old Gatling guns are more than good enough.

I said not long enough range to shoot down aircraft, not short range as in like video game short range. But I haven't been shooting ever full stop, so I just realised I didn't have to justify myself. The reason there's no point mounting any variant of the GAU on a tank is that the Thunderbird is, for all its beauty, inherently an inaccurate platform, so one mounts a rapid-fire weapon on it. Modern MBTs are accurate platforms, so one mounts an accurate weapon upon them.
