I lol'd.
Still, I think a better approximation of what you were trying to achieve can be found here, mainly the last section of the OP.
Also, might want a capital W in that username of yours.

I don't think I'll be doing a lot of moderating on my own, more like the wizard behind the curtain I guess. I don't think that deserves a special color :P

Why did Data want you here then? If your not going to moderate on your own?

I said I won't be doing a lot of moderating. Not NO moderating.

As time goes on my role will become a bit more clear. We have some announcements to make first. :)

He's planning radical system changes that he thinks will benefit the forum as a whole because it is a boilerplate solution.

You, as a user, can expect dramatic changes to the rules of the road here on the forum. Expect a clamp down on post content, signature length (if we're even permitted them at all), and a marked inflexibility of the staff to respond to situations.

This is going to be compounded by the fact that weasel is going to be doing this "behind the scenes," which is in stark contrast to the transparency the staff members have been attempting to encourage.

Once he has gone through the stages he wants to implement, you can expect your experience in this forum to become analogous to tiptoeing through a minefield.

Expect a large number of bans as the level of tolerance and discretion staff members are given is reduced to effectively zero.

Perhaps, in his experience as a community manager, weasel should consider brushing up on policing literature. The functions of a "community manager," or forum moderator are directly related to what police officers have to do. The crackdowns, iron-fisted rule, and authoritarian attitude we can expect of the upcoming regime are completely counterproductive to this community and will only engender disrespect and ingratitude.

So who shared the Modchat doc with you? :)
Because I am not having a conversation in secret with you, and am opening up this dialog with the community. Right off the bat, you can see his message to me confirms everything that I have said. And the fact that I received this classified document from multiple sources just shows how much more trust I have than you.

My analysis of your plan of action is a presupposition based on existing experience with web communities. Now, I might not be the professional community manager you are, but I have managed enough forums and organizations and groups to know what works in what situation doesn't work in another. And I know (from experience) that trying to strong-arm this forum will not work.

Ask anyone who was here when I was a moderator: I tried what you are about to try--it does not work. You do not engender friendliness or kindness in a community by putting a boot to their neck.

I'm actually just planning on turning the forums into a boring place, that is slow and uneventful.

You're going to ban those who aren't ridiculously passive. Which means that 99.99 of the smart, funny, and/or senior members.

You need to lurk more.

DRLFF IS a positive and friendly place. Telling someone a horrible mod is good instead of criticizing it (and making them create something better by preventing them from making the same mistakes) is neither friendly nor useful; in fact, forcing everyone to be nice would stop all motivation for better mods, since newbs would simply bask in false praises.

To get some things straight:

I have some plans. I posted them privately to ModChat, so the current community leaders could chip in and suggest what might work, what might not, and how we might approach the future of this thing. What you were posted in IRC by Skiv was not a final document nor an exact roadmap for what will happen. To take it as such is foolish.

Secondly, my plans don't involve strongarming anyone. I simply wish to alter the course of the forums to be more positive, instead of the more negative angle it has now. If everyone decides to go along with it and this becomes a happier place, and there is one guy who keeps beaking off and breaking rules - well, I guess I'll have to pull out the banhammer on him, sure.

In any case, no plans are finalized. I'm not doing anything for at least a week. There's some announcements by Data coming up and I'll be a bit more public with things, once I figure out what's going on and what the optimal path is.

Make sure you figure out the full story first.

The fact that you even suggested it is indicative that that is the generalized direction you wish to go in. You're planning on dramatic, behind-the-scenes changes to a community that has been working on encouraging transparency and accountability in its actions.

Your responses to my statements have no real substance to them. You talk about happy places and fun and stuff, but you aren't providing a goal-oriented solution to this forum.

You talk about all this negativity in the forum, yet you don't bother to give examples, so many I will try:

Are you talking about the negativity in Mod Releases? Unfortunately, the quality of third-party content has been in a steep decline. And the community is not in the business of pandering to bad content.

If there are other "negative" aspects to this forum, perhaps you should consider discussing them with us. And so I will say the same to you, perhaps you should get the whole lay of the land before you even consider discussing "road maps" of where you want the forums to be.

You need to know where the forums are now before you plan on taking them somewhere else (and conssider whether or not anyone wants to go along for the ride).
