Nethack - The greatest roguelike ever
I'm sure some of you have heard of Nethack. For those who haven't, Nethack is a complex roguelike game, and in my opinion the best ever. Levels are randomly generated so every game is different. Its kind of hard to describe Nethack so I'll just quote a post of mine from another forum: I wrote: I just had one of the craziest games ever. I chose to play a wizard, at around dungeon level 3 I've acquired some pretty good stuff and lots of food. Suddenly, I trigger a magic trap, it blinds me and a few jackals and some other monster attempt to kill me, I easily force bolt them all to death, getting me to level 5. I go down to dungeon level 5 and there I level up once again, I go down another level. Here I walk down a long (about 15 tile) corridor, and discover an army of 12 Mordor waiting for me at the exit. I force bolted those to death too. Next I enter a room, there are about 15 Uruk Hai. I quickly leave while my cat soaks up their hits and dies. While trying to around the Uruk Hai room three ants run up to me and kill me. Its like the game wanted me to loose!
Edit: Another thing, I heard the word finagle today and didn't know what it was, but I thought it would make a nice name for my cat. I named him Finagle and then looked the word up (It means swindle). Finagle then ran towards a shop, and came back with an orange potion (The one the shop keeper had in stock).
I love Nethack! Get it hereThe Nethack wikiDiscuss.

Re: Nethack - The greatest roguelike ever
Nethack is grate, although it lacks in combat compared to DF Adventure mode. IVAN has some nice crazyness as well. Not to mention Dungeon Crawl, which is basically nethack with better tunnels but less depth (don't play stone soup it sucks and tiles are for metrosexuals).
Also, if you share some bones files with someone, be sure to name your dog "The invisible cockatrice attacks! The dog"
So that when they get attacked, they see "The invisible cockatrice attacks! The dog bites."

Funny, I was going to suggestion Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (v0.5). I've had a lot of fun with it recently. I guess one man's soup is another man's poison. I haven't played Nethack in ages. I should check it out to see what's new and interesting. -- TAZ

Nethack is nowhere near the greatest because dying isn't and never will be fun
it's always funny when people brag about ascending after 17 years... in a game where luck matters more than skill

I like Nethack, I want to play it, beat it, etc. I just can't be bothered to memorize all the little stupid keyboard commands.

Heh. Actually, the thing I like most in NetHack is the variety of ways in which you can die. Extract from my scoreboard in the game: -Kota, human, level 3, killed by an angry hobbit; -Sarah, elf, level 2, died by a broken leg due to kicking a wall; -Bob, orc, level 7, choked with a jackal bone; -Thork, human, level 2, died by accidentally drinking acid; ... and so on.

My favorite death is 'exhaustion' from basically getting raped to death by a succubus.

More like your pony kicking you off and the rolling down the stairs under your heavy load and get crushed against a wall.
Also dieing against Death is the worst way to die.
