I just was reminded of this:

Anyway, electric sheep is very interesting to look at. Extremely abstract(animated fractals).

It's the most beautiful screensaver I've had for the least CPU intensive-ness.

I had one of those reallyslick ones before, it's truly awesome, but the point of a screensaver is to save energy, not take up more CPU than it would if it were idle.

The original point was to prevent screen burnout on CRTs.

Of course if you have an LCD, screensavers are just a decoration.

I'm pretty sure modern CRTs are pretty burnout-safe. I never had a problem with it at least.

Um, what?
It works just fine on Vista after being converted.

Basically it takes all your desktop icons, and blows them
around according to the weather conditions in your area.

Keyword: Original. Old CRTs had a bad tendency to damage the phosphoric lining on the glass panel. As such, you would get phosphor burn-in. You use certain pixels too often (ie, leave certain still imagery on the screen) and you will damage the componets.

Additionally, this is not limited to old CRTs. New CRTs and flat-panels (both LCD and plasma) are capable of being affected by this. They are significantly more resistance to it, but it is quite possible.

TL;DR: Burn-in happens even now, but most people are smart and use screensavers/turn equipment off.

I've seen little java applets simulating a zombie invasion with grey walls and pink/green dots running around. Something like that is what I'm looking for but on a grander scale.

Can you give me a link to that if you still remember where you saw it? Or at least a name you can remember or something.

Small screen, and it can be done faster.
