Post 3D models *please critique*
These are some of the 3d models I've made using Blender. Some are better than others. Please feel free to critique, comment, or post your own models. Any constructive criticism is encouraged. And sorry for the gigantic pictures.

My friend and I decided to see who could make a better alarm clock. I think mine was better.

Recently made a chess board while in Nebraska, for lack of anything better to do. And yes i know the king and queen are in the wrong spots on the white side.

Your modeling's decent, textures are bad, though that probably has as much to do with the program you're using as your own skill.

With most of these, I never took a lot of time to get good looking textures. The only one I really tried on was the chess board, and even then I'm not perfectly happy with it.

I use blender cuz it's free. Once I have money I'll invest in a better program.

After a certain level, there is not a "better" modeling program. It depends on what you're used to. If your job requires you to use some standardized program, that's one thing, but for personal use you should stick with what you know. Blender is a fine program, on par with Maya, 3DSMax, and Poser, once you get to know it I haven't had the pleasure, I was brought up with Wings3D, can't get used to Blender's modeling style...

OT: Nice models. Have you considered installing a renderer, like YafRay, to get more mileage out of your glass materials?

Well there's better modeling programs but you only really get them at places like say, Pixar.

I've tried using Yafaray, and could never figure out how the hell to get it to work. :???:

I've been using blender for as long as I've been modeling, which is only like 3 or 4 months, and I like it. And i guess if it's up their with 3ds and whatnot, I'll just stick with it.

Nice to see another Blender user! Blender really is quite powerful. As far as basic modeling is concerned, no current application, be it blender, 3dsmax, maya or some secret Pixar software really is better than the other. They might have different ways to achieve the same end, but they are all very powerful.

Fur simulation, physics, and other such "gimmicks" are another thing, though.

Your modeling is quite nice, not bad at all. You might want to try playing around with lighting and materials more at some point. Blender's internal rendering engine is quite powerful these days. If you want realistic glass, read this:

Basically, set the material's transparency to 0.1, Ray Transparency on, IOR to 1.52 and Depth to at least 4 and you have pretty convincing glass.

with the cup i used Ray Transp.
I just didn't wanna use IOR because it made it look weird. I think thats because i modeled it rather sloppily.

Glass is reflective too. Use RayMir.

Also, increase the hard light for the specularity, it seems as if you use the default diffuse and specular shaders in all your works. And of course, for glass objects, the most realistic results can be obtained by using Yafaray instead of the blender internal renderer.

I didn't make those wineglasses, I pulled them out as an example. I could easily, I just would have to get the material settings right. With yafaray you can achieve caustics, better GI, and so on. But when it comes to compatibility, such as rendering hair and halos, Yafaray fails. Or at least Yafray does (yafray is the old yafaray, I'm not sure if yafaray is able to render all the blender-created things. Blender internal is getting a lot better and optimized, and IBL (image based lighting) has already been in a test build as well as some amazing tests with caustics. A better blender internal is a better blender.).
