Silent during the main blast, and then a deafening explosion. Similar to the sonic bomb in StarWars.

I like the idea of a crosshair.

Personnally, I think the Ypsilon cannon should fire a gigantic beam to make an equally enormous hole, then release 20-30 medium-sized heat-seeking rockets and finally explode in a violent burst of plasma.

Weapon ideas (some similar may have already been suggested; I'm not reading six pages of posts -.- Ignore them if that's the case)

-Tactical Sonic Beam (TSB, since AAL is full of acronyms these days): Fires off a barely visible, steamy looking beam that represents sound waves; when the beam hits terrain, it explodes and destroys any actors with kinetic energy who are within a few hundred feet of the bomb; would not seriously harm the terrain (Like, maybe a small crater where it first explodes)

-Ionic Carpet Bombardment (ICB): Small pulses of energy fire down at very fast intervals, advancing across the battlefield in a matter of seconds and destroying any actors in the path. Think of Soldat's TW Airstrike, only with energy =P

-Area Denial Laser (ADL): A laser a few feet wide (~50-100 pixel-width) falls down and forms a deadly barrier between the sky and a surface through which no actor can pass without dying. Doesn't affect terrain; lasts about 30 seconds.

-Reactant Nuclear Beam (RNB): Fires off two lasers that start the same distance away from the designator. They move towards the designator, picking off a few actors who get hit in a vulnerable area by the lasers, and when the beams cross each other, they create an explosion similar to the Thermo-Nuclear warhead already included in AAL. This could probably be pulled off using timed emitters to simulate when the lasers cross and explode. Explosion would epicly rape terrain and actors

-Electromagnetic Pulse Strike (EMPS): A missile would streak down and impact the designated target, and then explode into a two-stage death-dealing blow; the first would be something of a start-up effect, lightning flying everywhere as though someone took 30 DS Electrolasers and fired them in different directions; this would be fairly short range for such a bomb, it would cover maybe the whole screen and kill all actors on the screen with the bolts. The second stage would be a bunch of lightning colliding in the middle of the explosion and eventually imploding, then expanding out and killing almost all actors on the surface of a map. Kind of like the TSB, but it would use both sharp and mass-based particles instead of just mass-based ones, so it would rape the terrain too.

You forgot the antimatter air bomb.

A defense system that shoots chaff as well as something I like to call "smart flechette launchers".

Smart flechette launchers: the Ypsilon would fire out a canister that flys towards the nearest target like a homing missile. Upon arrival withing a certain area (you determine this) of the target, the canister would begin to shoot flechettes at it for about7 seconds then fll to the ground and explode moderately.

Red would be sexy
blue is pretty good
green is a little funky
purple is pretty crazy, and it's also the highest frequency of visible light, which is closer to stuff like gamma rays, so if it'd be a higher frequency laser.

Dunno, but orange would look awful.

Blue and red are good. Purple, depending on the shade, would be either awesome or weird. And probably not nice to colorblind people.

What if it faded around the colorwheel? Not epilepsy-inducing flashing, a nice fade through the reds, greens, blues, and in-betweens. That would look wicked.

I say Red.

Red's close to orange without being orange.

Besides, Red is pretty much color code for "you are ♥♥♥♥ now"

I still think blue is the best possible laser colour, obviously this is something everyone has a different opinion on.
Because of this you might as well just leave it up to numgun to pick one

numgun should have a poll to see what color would be best. That way its most appealing to the people who whould most use it.

Want. now.

ideas:
raining grenades

raydeation beam.

converging laser.

drilling laser that drills 10 feet, and drops a bomb into the that wipes the map in 15 seconds.

gravty ray: increased gravty on the intire map, plastoring to the floor all units, and smushing thouse poor souls right underneath the blast

vacume: sucks up actors and vice versa into the gun

fan: pushes away actors.

-good luck,
lafe

Agreed, a poll would be best.

Or he could have different types of lasers with a different color each?

Um, I was kind of thinking about white color for the beam originally...

But now that you mention purple, red and blue... hmm. I'll see what will work the best when I get to the testing phase. But no, it wont be green, yellow, pink or orange.

I played some Lost Planet: EC yesterday and the very game that gave me the whole "thermal energy" idea thing (except I treat it like the minovsky particle stuff from gundam UC) and while playing I noticed it used blue colors along with the orange ones. It looked pretty cool. I might tweak the AAL sprites to have a bit of both just like in Lost Planet. The color of energy was blue before so having both in the mix might be damn awesome.

On a sidenote: VS mechs for BW:Mercenaries. Will happen one day. ♥♥♥♥ yes.

Isn't thor allowed to have an opinion?
