And when will Mail/Cambiogris be unbanned from those Piracy posts?

There are better places to ask this.

1 day.

They should be unbanned by now.

Ugh, first you people say that we should ban those who are flaming and whatnot.

So we tentatively take your advice, and ban some of the more extreme members E.G. Pirates.

Instantly the whole forum erupts in outrage.

Also, in answer to front page, usually noobs get their answer if they are literate.

I could give more, but that'd be link spam.

Why is everyone ganging up on Miles?
Because said people dislike Miles for one reason or another and tend to be vocal about it. Though he does occasionally make significantly challenging arguments, a large amount of people tolerate this. The reason it appears that 'everybody' is ganging up on him is because the people that disagree with him tend to be vocal due to the challenging nature of his post. A good degree of his posts are neither wall'o'texts nor challenging, and this is why they go either unnoticed or are responded to normally.
And then of course we get posts challenging enough in nature for him to be banned, but that's beside the topic.

Whilst you make significantly good points I must respond to your last point. From what I gather you have some proficiency in programming, possibly via prior experience or possibly just because you're good at it. Your point is quite valid, however for some people this is their first venture into programming and thus lack basic knowledge of this, meaning it is also valid for more experienced members to direct them.

Also, this being directed at Zalo, I fail to see the places where outrage occured... though perhaps you meant IRC, which I have not ventured into...

*Comes back*

I agree with noob hostility.

The hostility I disagree with is random, ego driven attacks, based of nit picking.

@411570N3
I agree, the largest complaint over my ban in the fourms(I think the response to cambogris's ban was positive) was a few posts in my mod.

When did we start talking about moral code? I think you are little bit on confused side here. To clarify. I'm not against punishing people who fail or don't want to understand. I want first of all everyone to behave reasonably. Secondly I want to leave such matters to moderators, users should stay away and refrain from littering forum with useless posts. Moderator explains politely situation to delinquent why his post/thread was deleted (so he won't just start new one while wondering what happened to first). If that doesn't help then mod cleans all litter left by and bans said person. Simple. No insulting flaming and stuff like that. User who just made stupid mistake by asking some "done to death" question because didn't used search function will know to do so next time, if he wants to play "hard way" then we can say goodbye and don't come back. Keep trolls away while refraining from flaming/insulting/scaring away potentialy worthy users.

Yes, that bolded bit is your moral code.
And I tried exactly that on the Picture Wars forums.
It didn't work.

I used to believe that if we could all just sit around and be nice to each other, things would be just great. New members would be treated with love and respect and grow from tiny seeds to beautiful flowers, filling our forum with fantastic matches and imaginative armies.
I believed this so much that I convinced many of the other staff members that I was right, and we went around banning people, deleting posts and generally kicking ass.

The result was not what I had hoped.

Instead of beautiful flowers, without the sharp edge of the gardener's shears my forums were being overrun with WEEDS. People were making stupid armies and uninteresting matches, and my own rules stopped people from telling them just how bad they were!
The temp forums that were made when the real ones had server problems, especially, made it clear to me that I had been wrong all along. The sheer amount of unwanted rubbish made it hard to see anything beautiful at all, and drove most of the finest blooms from the message board.
They came back when we moved off of the temporary board but then after reading my horrible extended metaphor they might want to leave again

Hey idiots, stop talking about people being banned. This is a perfectly good topic.

Maybe you were understaffed?
This is the only intelligent thing to come out of this guy's mouth in the entire thread.

DRLFF is understaffed. We need more staff, with a structured moderation environment so that responses to incidents are even and balanced between users.

Unfortunately, we have neither of those. We do not have enough staff members to deal with the volume of posts. And the staff members that we do have do not follow any sort of guideline. It is Wild West Sheriff on the Internets.

No one cares about pirates.

No one will care about pirates anywhere if you can't maintain general law and order in a system. Deal with the ♥♥♥♥ posting first. Another one of this boards problems: Unable to prioritize issues and deal with them in a logical order.

I swear to god, there are sub-Saharan African countries that are run with more efficiency than this board.

And CrazyMLC is onto something with the "Best moderators are lurkers" mentality. Awhile back, I was advocating anonymous moderating, which would serve to disconnect the community with who was doing the moderating, so as to minimize the hostility between moderators and moderated users.

This is the main reason why moderators in the past have lost their permissions. They piss someone off by becoming a target of repeat moderation, and they take it personally. You kill two birds with one stone. Give people moderator abilities, but don't allow people to know who they are. The Stasi of DRLFF.

O sorry, new to the forum and you seem very up tight, with my other thread as well  nice to know that the community is so nice and welcoming, especially to newcomers. :???:

Hostility? Because of people like him who provoke it.
Edit: Example of Hostility to newcomers that seems to be quite ontopic.

I don't care that I double posted because there is no delete button in this subforum.

I didn't double post intentionally, as lots of people are known to do.

And you're being just as hostile. I am in here trying to make a structured reasonable point, and you are clearly trying to troll me into a response. If you want someone to take you seriously, you'd best not try to poke the bear while he is sleeping, okay?

And if you want to go toe-to-toe in terms of rhetoric and wit, I would be more than happy to give it ago, considering there is a 99% chance I am intellectually superior to you

But that is besides the point. How about you focus on this thread, instead of clearly trying to just troll someone?

Hopefully that shut you up.

LOL.
While you posted I was actually rereading the first post and was going to edit what I put to add in some extra opinions, although my post was ontopic, it was giving a example of hostility towards newcomers, looking at some of the other posts I believe I can do so. Yet now that you've replied to me I can post this without it beign a.....Double post!
How was it not intentionally any how? I don't care that I double posted.

You act as if these forums belong to yourselves and impose your intimidating demeanor on people who just want to explore the game, or even simply discuss things you have a different opinion on!

So true, yet again so many forums are like this. It's like typical basic forum behaviour, I've never really seen a unhostile forum, apart from new ones. Just look at Facepunch for example, I don't follow many forums, infact this is the only one that i've recently been on alot, probably only because I bought CC.
It's kinda like every one copies each other as well, like typical behaviour. If a noob is treated wrongly yet has the intelligence to improve on himself he would most likely treat new people when he's more familiar and known in the forum the same way he was treated, if you get what I mean.

Oh and you have typical forum layouts and rules which follow almost every forum in most typical ways. So every forum is very similar due to its provider and system and as such the behaviour is provoked in a similar manor.
I mean i'm posting a reply right now and i'm about to submit it...where have I seen that feature before? You get my point.

Are you suggesting that the fact that all message boards are boards upon which people post messages is a bad thing?

The fact of the matter is that people are people. Everyone responds to external stimuli different. The higher the board's population, the higher the complexity.

You want to see a ♥♥♥♥? Go to the World of Warcraft forums, a forum that ideally supports 6 000 000 individual users. They don't even bother, because there is too much garbage to filter through. You could have a moderation staff of 1 000 and still not have enough moderators to take care of the shit-posting.

At some point, the system has to moderate itself, and that is what we are accomplishing here.
