so doom, doom 2, quake 4, and then quake, quake 2, quake 3, doom 3. look at the game play, I think they traded dev-teams.

Actually, you're pretty damn right there. I loved Quake 4 for that reason. It does seem like a bit of switch there. Though when I really start itching for a non-planar doom fix, I just fire up legacy doom.

want another bit on that? Compare the enemies.

The first strogg you encounter, compare to doom 2, those skeleton guys with rocket-launchers on there shoulders. Those huge pink demon things in D2, compare to the huge ape football player tackle you thing in Q4. Flying trash-cans, flying thing with nailgun and homing missiles. these look like there ripped right out of the late levels of doom, with a more modern makeover.

Level design, look at all the random bloody bits everywhere.

Gameplay, They give you armor exactly when you need it in about 30 seconds, it goes from hur-dee-dur theres nothin here, to OMFG HUGE GUY IN MY FACE, just like doom. In quake its more of an "your in this base thing, its being over-run, there are enemies EVERYWHERE (except in little hidden rooms full of ammo) and you just never stop fighting unless you kill everything.

Quake = action, doom = action/horror. Quake 4 is action horror, with similar level design, similar character design, they even keep the little 'go to the elevator and push the button to finish the level' gimick.

and back on topic, has anyone even played the old marathon games?

There bastard children aren't actually there bastard children, if you look up a set of books in a series called 'Star Hammer', the plot, races, etc, seem to be the same (I haven't personally read it but from what I've heard its what Bungie based there entire halo universe off of, with some aliens quotes thrown in for good measure) Unfortunately, it seems Marathon is just as close to another series of books.

Not that that makes a bit of difference on gameplay. Marathon had way more effort put into it I thought, even if it is old as dirt now. :D

So, would you compare the dummys in CC to a rampant AI?

DOOM 1 (I guess that sorta means I like 2 as well), Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, and UT 1999 (wish I still had that damn game).

Marathon is godlike.
There are some old sketches in my attic dating from before Marathon came out, they look exactly like the Marathon Man.

Left4Dead ...fun with buddies in coop.. and zombies!
FEAR ...the only good "scary" fps, and the AI and difficulty was good too, the sequel had beautifull maps but was boring and easy as hell.
Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 ...was a ton of fun in their time, loved necrobone's maps the most.

Play Halflife 2, in 5.1 surround sound, alone, in the dark, through ravenholm, from the start to the finish, with only the gravity gun, pistol, crowbar, and when you get it, shotgun.

then play Halflife 2 episode 1, from the point when you get out of the citadell up untill you get outside, Only use the gravity gun, crowbar, or grenades. same other circumstances.

also, do this on the hardest settings. Death comes in an instance, and they did a good job of making horror. OH YEAH and the hospital in Ep 1.

As far as I'm concerned, no videogame has ever been truely 'scary' but those parts come damn close. videogames can't do horror, they just sort of become action with random suspense and 'oooo creepy flashes of images' wow, even halo 3 did that. oh and refferencing master chiefs lifesigns going to 0 when they happen, oh wow, thats so spooky. quake 4 wasn't scary, none of the dooms where scary, they where just jumpy. half-life at least sets the mood well. great now I wanna play that. damn it.

Friend of mine made me play F.E.A.R. in the dark with speakers as big as I am. I have never hated surround sound more. The goddamn ladder.

Penumbra and such are worse than F.E.A.R.

It isn't really even scary.
