the first one is pretty good everywhere except the stock, which is an odd shape.. the second one is too boxy.

For one man projekt that looks so good.
That kinda explains the "inactivity" with CC...
I wish I could do that..

They are simple square planes, sprites have the unfortunate effect of looking very... the same? like, all the same orientation and such

first real model in blender (the other one was a pawn chess piece I copied from a tutorial over a year ago)
It looks better in blender than when rendered

Really good for a start, if you have a look in editing in your buttons window you should be able to find a Set Smooth button, that will get rid of the jagged shading on the edges.

Also if you add a modifier to it called Subsurf you can make it add more polys for the render.

Just a couple things to try :)
