3DSMax isn't used for kids screwing around with 3d for the first time. It's a commercial program. Disney did the entirety of Shrek with it.

I suggest using blender over the other apps (I've tried them all, maya's probably the best for intuitiveness) it's very easy to use and its free and has all the features most major 3d packages contain and has its own games/programming bit, though the interface is confusing at first. I made a tutorial blog thing for krumbs here: http://blendertuts4ya.blogspot.com/

I find Maya incredibly unintuitive, I'd much rather use 3ds Max, I swear the only reason it's so popular is because all the big shots paid for expensive Maya courses and don't want to admit there are better programs around.

I only started learning blender a couple months ago but it's turned out to be a fantastic program, it has some great documentation on the official wiki and it's full of fancy features that makes it perfect for games design.

I've never paid for anything related to a 3d product and certainly never had any courses, I'm 16 for starters.
