Post How to unbind escape key?
So hitting the escape key once drops you out of your current game, no warning, and hitting it again exits the game completely, again with no confirmation or anything. From an interface standpoint, this sucks - a 'exit without saving' function without a 'are you sure you want to exit' message is just asking for annoyed users - myself being one such annoyed user. If the function to re-map or disable that escape button action is in there, I missed it.

I know I generally use the Esc to pause, and then hit it again intending to un-pause.. that's not what happens.

It's a tiny bit irritating and I know I'd like a real pause function, preferably stopping the action without going to the menu, using the Pause/Break key.

Errr.... If you press escape mid-game then there's a resume button down the bottom which you might find helpful.

Since when is Escape not an exit button?

I mean, it's called ESCAPE. As in GET OUT.

Pausing to a soft menu would 1 break the flow of CC 2 be pig disgusting 3 possibly require engine rewriting.

Probably a bad idea.

I've got to disagree - good interface design has a lot to do with following established conventions in order to meet user expectations.

Try hitting it now. Does your browser close? Try it in a bunch of common applications - an explorer window, notepad, calculator... it doesn't close. Try it in a bunch of other games - Warcraft III, Dawn Of War II, FEAR 2, Red Alert 3 - all of these are modern games, and none of them close when you hit the 'escape' key.

Once again, look at all those games I listed - every single one pauses to a 'soft menu' before quitting. In fact, hitting the escape (or F10 in the RTS games) once brings up the pause menu, and hitting it again turns the menu back off and goes back to the game again. Can you think of any game, or any program even that lets you exit without confirmation?

'pig disgusting' or not, regardless of whether it requires 'engine rewriting' (unlikely), it is a good idea.

Modders like it though, a quick double-tap of the esc key is useful when testing stuff.
It should just be a option.

None, including CC. Pressing escape once does nothing. There's a helpful little resume button right down the bottom of the menu. Unless you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder then the Esc twice shortcut isn't going to be a problem as such.

Whoa whoa whoa wait - when I'm in the middle of the game, if I press escape, it drops me back to the main menu, and if I hit it again, it kicks me all the way out of the game, back to windows. This isn't what happens for everyone else?

Ignore him, he's probably drunk again or something.

Although I'm not sure how bad is the escape key to close everything. Just remember that its ment for closing the app and if you went to the menu to change control setting or something else, you can return to the game with the "Resume game" button.

Although there is one scenario where the escape key might be bad:
Either ur mom or a random jackass or even your friend that is loosing the game will hit the ESC key in the middle of everything and ♥♥♥♥ it all up.

Right - I mean, I get that there's an easy way around the problem - just don't hit the escape key so much. But my point is, that's a workaround, instead of a fix - the problem still exists, I'd just be avoiding it. And think about it on a bigger scale - not just me, but eventually once it's released, everyone who plays and expects hitting 'escape' again will take them back to the game, not quit the program. Like I said, interface design is about meeting user expectations through use of conventions - I realize that the game isn't finished yet, but all I'm saying is, in the completed version, stuff like this ought to be carefully considered. Bad user experience = bad reviews = low sales, in a very general sense.

I consider it a feature. Perhaps a check box is in order, but right now I find it more useful than detrimental.

it's undeniably useful for popping in and out of things while you're modding, no arguments there. but when someone's actually playing, I guarantee they're going to hit 'escape' to pause, find themselves at the main menu, then freak out because they'll think they quit their game, and hit 'escape' again to get back to it, only to find themselves quitting, unsaved.

The escape button is slightly removed from the other buttons for the sole purpose of hyperactive retarded monkeys slamming their keyboards against their heads while playing a game and not having it pause or end the game.

Let's put it this way: I've been playing this game for roughly 3 years now, and this is the first time I've ever heard this complaint.

Do you really think anyone besides you really cares about this single design aspect?

I mean, really, unless you've got parkinsons I don't see how double tapping the key could be that much of a problem, and there's a FLASHING BUTTON telling you where to resume gameplay.

Personally I don't think the escape key should go to a soft menu or anything, but double-tapping it shouldn't just close the game. It should at least give a warning. I know a lot of people who accidentally close CC in the middle of the game by accident.
