Re: Build 23: COMING SOON! :D + Mac Build
I wasn't saying anything about why it's called gold, I'm just questioning why it's seen as desirable in the context of the CC universe by a highly advanced civilization when it's not all that valuable for practical purposes.
While I acknowledge that it does have practical purposes, such as it's conductivity, it's not an extremely high value material, for practical purposes, and that in such an advanced futuristic civilization, I would think it would have been disconnected with the economy as an effective symbol of wealth. Currency is just 'credit' attached to an object. Rare resources aren't needed to fill the role, synthetic cheaply produced objects can do the job just as well, IF their synthesis is properly controlled. See: paper currency, although it's generally not well controlled. (paper money has been cheap kindling at some points in history) This credit doesn't even have to be attached to an object though, we're moving away from that already with credit cards. If 'credit' is distributed properly, a consistent economy is much more possible, simple, and effective.
But I digress. Jesus, if this thread is the American intercontinental railroad in the 1870s, my train is horrifically rolling lengthwise over kangaroos off in Australia in 2649. But will kangaroos even be around then? Maybe I just ensured they wont be around after then. Oh dear. And I'm looking way too far into this, gold is just a gameplay mechanic in a little indie game, in this context. Quite simple. But if you're curious, go ahead and highlight and read my post.

Maybe they need it for brain conduits.

or.. they call it gold because it is a heavy, malleable, ductile, lustrous metallic element, much like the gold on earth, only more common and you can buy clones with it.

CandleJack wrote: Maybe they need it for brain conduits. Uh, yeah, but that application wouldn't make that big of a need if we're somewhat new to the whole intergalactic spread thing, and each one just needed like half a pixel of gold. That would not generate a frantic violent gold rush inducing demand for it. Geti wrote: or.. they call it gold because it is a heavy, malleable, ductile, lustrous metallic element, much like the gold on earth, only more common and you can buy clones with it. It would obviously be exactly like the gold on earth, physically. As to the last bit, Grif brought that into questioning flawlessly. Grif wrote: Thus begging the question of what Tradestar uses it for. Probably going into an economy like our own, where it does next to nothing, but is considered as high value just for the reason of everyone else considering it as high value. So it will be sold and sold, and sold, until it's been worn down, still serving no purpose, but then being replaced by means of long, arduous toiling and brutal violence taking place on a life-supporting planet that's slowly being destroyed by the process. It's silly to think that at that advanced point we could do that, literally generating our own suffering needlessly. But Data is no prophet, which is obvious from his estimated release dates, so we should not expect him to be one, we should rather expect a fun game. And B23 like a month ago or whatever he said. I apologize again for the digression, but it is an interesting topic. The gold worth, that is. I somehow found the way back to the transcontinental railroad though, so lets stay here for a while and watch it serve +10 purposes for the developing industry of the time. (only one person on these forums would understand why I said that last bit, so don't expect to. He has probably caused you a headache, if you'd like a hint as to who that would be.) Continue gold value discussion here, if at all: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13563

What do you mean what do they use it for? It's ♥♥♥♥ gold! GOOOLLDDDD!!!....it's basically a huge gold rush like in the 1800's, but with much better weaponry.

please read the post above you for a link to post your thoughts on gold. ♥♥♥♥ i want a new build right now. i wouldnt really care if it were kinda buggy, im in support of multiple smaller releases rather than many big ones. just as long as the multiple little ones dont rename heaps of variables.

I agree entirely. I would rather productivity go down a little and builds be more frequent, than get the final game asap and nothing in the meantime. Builds every 1 or 2 months consistently would be awesome, but that's obviously never going to happen. And since mac users got b22.5 or whatever you want to call it, it'd be nice if they could post a screen cap of this uber cannon I keep hearing about. I had no hesitation providing images of b19 dummies and craft gibs when I got it a little early. Less hesitation than the mods/admins wanted in the context, I remember, but still, cmon, just a couple quick still screen caps of it's use, it's lame to not even show us it after over a month of having it first. That post was edited in response to his post; I just wanted to avoid making more posts about... the subject of that other topic which shouldn't be discussed further here.

The reason for no 22.5 screenshots is that Mac users are either too stupid or too elitest (I'm looking at you ProjectODIN) to upload them.

Re: Build 23: COMING SOON! (as of 12/1/2008)
no, the reason is i dont have time to take screencaps when im at joshes house, and he doesnt forum. i might next time if i remember. basically its a beefier flak cannon that shoots a ball that explodes into the following components Code: a tiny lifetime, fast moving storm of grenade fragments a longer lifetime storm of simmilar consistency at lower speed a lot of smoke and fire some small bomblets that are invisible, and explode fire and shrapnel i think it costs 400 oz. i cant remember. there are a bunch of renames aswell, especially through the coalition stuff.

Neat, and a spike launcher too? Does that function much like how one can assume? Does it do it well?
But maybe a pic of the uber cannon's use? Cmon, prove Exalion and my thoughts I kept to myself wrong.
