Post I really *want* to like Cortex Command
I love a lot of things about CC: the style, pixel art, base building, weapons, tactics, explosions and general chaos... etc.

But, I feel like the heavily-physics-bound character movements are a real liability sometimes. I find my actors to be awkward, stumbling, tripping, and fumbling when I am controlling them, and it doesn't feel good. The very act of moving an actor across the scene is a challenge in itself... and there are other challenges I'd rather be focusing on (namely fighting). Games like Soldat manage to use physics to a good extent while still having smooth controls for the most part. Maybe actors need a bit of leniency from the physics engine, if that makes any sense?

I know what you're thinking: "well then, get out of here and go play Soldat!"

But CC is really awesome! The potential here is huge and Data Realms has made a tremendous accopmlishment already. I just feel like the amount that physics are tied to character controls may make it hard for newcomers to stick with the game.

now is that a way to welcome such a well spoken new member? the points brought up are valid, and i the issue is fixed, so the game is more noob friendly (i remember the first time my guy tripped. he was soon crushed by a falling robot, tomato sauce ensued), but the truth is you get used to it, and jet more.

Yes, it is the way to welcome a new member. He's doing something wrong, I'm asking him to fix it--politely.

Hey, ODIN and Geti, there's a thread for your topic as well: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13023&start=0

So, jcromartie. There's really nothing wrong with your argument. It WOULD be kinda nice if our guys could run and jump more smoothly, rather than always wondering whether or not their leg is going to fall off at a false move. At the same time though, this game isn't really a scrolling shooter or anything. Regardless, this'd be a hard decision for Data to make, since it kinda asks to change some fundamentals of the game.

Of course, already the game is set up so human actors automatically keep their torsos upright. I suppose some more things like that could be imposed upon them.

I didn't post in the wish list because it's not a handful of oddball features that someone thinks would be "LIEK TOTALY AWEXOME DUDEZ." It's more of a holistic gameplay issue. I guess if I made it a wishlist item it would be "make it not so hard to walk."

I agree, it's a fairly large issue that ties into a large portion of the game. It's basically useless to walk except for fine tuning your aim, any actual movement is accomplished by jetpacks; which makes all the cheap actors without jetpacks totally useless. Anyone ever buy a skeleton or zombie? They'd be uselful defenders, buy a few with pistols to cheaply drive off weaker attackers... but since they don't have jetpacks, they just take up menu space.

I think the wish list should be for features or spesific units (IE, it'd be awesome to have tanks, larger mecha, working ywrap and differently orented gravity, ect), but larger issues like this need their own topics.

Just give a skeleton a heavy digger, it acts as a propulsion unit and a weapon, a very good weapon, you also dont have to worry about crash deaths since skellies are so durable to falling.

and it would be nice to be able to walk.

I'm glad someone else thinks that walking is a pain in this game.
Go for a much simpler method and ditch the physics for walking and you're golden. Save all that walking physics calculation time for doing explosions and gibs and stuff.

Walking's not THAT bad. And I rather like the fact that walking is physics controlled, unlike 99% of the game out there. With thoughfully appliedl jetpack boosts to get you over those rough parts, and I rarely have a problem.

An excellent point. All this physics is awesome, but everyone still seems to experience lag issues with regular vanilla in-game happenings. I've had a critical friend of mine ask me "and the point of physics controlling everything is...?" when talking about CC.

Yeah, I suppose it isn't THAT hard to get used to things. Maybe if the vanilla actors were just a bit tougher against impacts and breaking, it all wouldn't be so bad. NOt regarding the lag anyway.

Maybe Data should write a code that adapts walkpaths to rough terrain. Also, I think the main reason actors can't run is because the orientation of their core is always up. Data said that he might change that after seeing orbit lands.

So I was walking, and my leg broke off. Then my arms broke off.

Yeah.

I'm still buying the game soon... but yeah.

And people wonder how they can afford to sell clones so cheap.

So i was reading, and I saw somethings about this still being a beta. Then I realized nothing is perfect.

Yeah.

I still love the game...but yeah.

It's not fully done yet, he still has to iron out some major and minor kinks in the game. And even add new features. Just give him time, lots and lots of time.
