Hi, I recently decided to format my computer after years of usage and after cleaning up the hdd I gathered all the stuff that needed to be backed up.

That stuff includes lots of pictures, documents, music and some installers.
Theres slightly over 2gb of stuff that I really need to back up.


Now I wanted to ask you people if anyone knows a good application/program for compressing large files into as small as possible.
Something that is WAY more powerful than 7Zip or WinRar.

Tarballs are meant to be good, but I'm afraid I know little about them.

If there was something more powerful than Winrar and 7z then everyone would use that. You need to think before toasting breads.

TAR isn't a compression type, it's an archive format. It's often used with compressions like GZip2, LZMA (7zip's compression method), and the like.

It's mostly used with Linux stuff from what I've dealt with it.

7zip is probably the best general-purpose archiver available though.

I've heard about things like KGB archiver that supposedly compress far better, while taking days to do so, but I've never dealt with them.

e: looking at kgb's website, even it provides an extremely small size drop at the cost of a lot more CPU time, I really wouldn't bother with it

Go get some flash drives.

Or just one, if you have real money and can afford the $15 for a 4 gig or whatever you get for that much now.

o heck, you can get 4 2gig sticks of 5 dollars.. i wouldnt trust them for more then 20-40 transfers..but good for backin stuff up

o heck..2-3 gigs? if its just for archive you could store it on gmail .. google how to use gmail as a backup drive

I've heard about this a few times but never used it. looking around it has caused some people a few problems and it is still in beta, so download at your own risk I suppose.

the link above is good, that or just use a solid .rar on maximum compression everything.
people have been using .rars for quite some time for a reason: they work well. and 2GB of data will fit nicely in a .rar. why do you need it much smaller than 2GB anyway?

Anything will fit in a rar, up to some preposterous upper limit noone will ever use.

The problem is that he needs to get the files down to under some stupidly small size.

You can use Winrar. Just set it up to split the archive into multiple parts. Then, you can do whatever with the individual parts, and just put them back together to unrar it later. You can even specify the size of each segment.

Go and buy some DVD-R or DVD-RW they are cheap and useful . And for the winrar if i put a rar in a rar and in a rar , will be the size smaller ?
