I feel this works well, though the picture is old. The menu is my right click/windows key context menu for the desktop

How would you take a picture of it on a Mac. I drew the desktop myself but I assume you also want to see the icons.

Basically you just press ctrl+space (or any other hotkey) and it brings up this:

Type in what you want and press enter.
It might not be as fast as icons for some, but I've gotten used to using it for everything, and it leaves a more aesthetically pleasing desktop for the few times I see it. In the same vein as FARR: Launchy.
