Well it makes since. InstanceName is just how CC declare what things are called. If you have a copyof line that includes the instancename, it won't matter if you actually declare the instancename AS an instancename.

That line appears to do absolutely nothing...

It's a perfectly functional copyof line, it just seems to have an odd way of doing it.
Like grif said, it does make some sense that it works. Why it's like that though; not so much.
