Post CC for downloadable console games, could it work?
I'm going to use the Xbox 360 as an example (Because that's the only thing I play.)
If Data were to port CC to the Xbox live marketplace, do you think it could work?

The control scheme would include the following.

A: Jump, hold to use jetpack/Place objects on map/select option in command view
X: ??
B: ??
Y: ??
Left Thumbstick: Move
Right Thumbstick: Aim
Control pad: Bring up command options.
Left and Right Bumpers: Switch characters. (Hold to pan the map)
Right Trigger: Shoot
Left Trigger: ??

The finished product would include system link and online multiplayer, and a map editor. Data could also select the best mods on the forums and make them as downloadable content. Whether making them free or not is up to him.

What do you guys think?

I really doubt it would run very well on a console.

And anyway, there'd be no mods 0:

CC already has a controller control scheme. I've played it many times with my Wireless 360 controller on my PC. The only problem is, Microsoft chooses what they put on Arcade, and I'm pretty sure they get to "own" a little bit of the game by releasing it on their service. Data right now wants to own his game and make it the best he can before he releases it to the universe.

Also, the game isn't done yet. He probably needs to do that first.

What about PS3 though? When Data finishes CC then perhaps the PS3 would be the better choice? I think a game on the PS3 has mod support but I forgot what game it was. It may have been Devil May Cry.

I see any console fanboy wars here and both parties get banned. Just warning you all. DevLog makes me cranky.

On topic: Currently, we have no solid information if there will be a console release.

Very, very unlikely chance this will happen at all. Data mentioned online multiplayer is not a planned feature for Cortex Command.

We pretty much have one already. A full in-game map editor is expected, but don't hold your breath.

What. What's wrong with the time-tested solution of having users downloading what mods they like?

When I say console I mean all of the current next gen ones. I only used the 360 because I don't play my Wii too much and I don't own a PS3.

Neither of the "powerful" consoles has any decent amount of RAM; I believe that both have 512 megs. CC lags with 1 gig of RAM. It's incredibly RAM intensive. Plus, neither console has properly distributed computing power for the game to run correctly.

Add to that the fact that there's no way in hell for a mod downloading system to work right, at all, plus you're unable to edit mods, or create new ones, and also the fact that sprite editing an just get right out.

Online multiplayer is absolutely impossible, even on PCs that are capable of running single-player without lagging. The 20 mb game download, the lengthy .exe install, and then also the extracting of mods are all considerably too slow for console users.

Just for the sake of argument,

Just so you know, with Xbox Live you can download 500 MB demos and play them as soon as they download. I'm not going to keep arguing for online play, since Data says he won't work on it, but know that it isn't impossible. Plus, with a USB keyboard, and an implemented .ini editor ingame, mods could be done pretty easily.

See the thing is. You wonder how can the 360 exist to play games with only 512 mb of ram. Simple the console is running the game only. The whole dashboard is closed and a smaller less ram hogging dashboard takes place in game. In PC's on the other-hand, you have an operating system in the background, most likely some sort of anti-virus, other processes running, etc. A 360 is only running the game, and its very small core OS. That is how it survives with 512. Of course that doesn't mean CC will run like a charm. It just will work better than a PC with 1 gb. Maybe.

Also isn't CC more CPU intensive than ram intensive?

It's incredibly intensive on both.

I said that it lagged on a PC with 1gb of RAM. I've seen it lag on 2.6 ghz machines with 2 and more gigs of RAM.

CC is incredibly processor intensive; and I really don't think Microsoft is likely to want to distribute a game almost guaranteed to RRoD older-model 360s.

Well, unlikely though it is, I think it is an absolutely fantastic idea. I have a wii and a PS3, and have downloaded a few games on each, as far as distribution goes, it'd be a piece of cake. The Independent gaming scene on consoles in afire with actibity, and I think if somhow CC was tofind itself there, it would be adored by all, it'd be brilliant on a proper TV with all your friends (Me and my good chum played it on a projector, now that was fun).

Interestingly, I had a similar thought about Cortex command, butI thought about how nifty it would be as a sub-game for the likes of GTA IV (or GTA V, rather). GTA:San Andreas had a few simple little arcade games thrown in, and with the new iteration(s) upping the ante in every respect I reflected how fun it would be to have CC as a fully featured sub-game, a develpoer like rockstar would jump all over it, I'm certain (It' snot ike violence is an issue for them, clearly). This is, of course, even more unlikely than having it as a downloadable, but it the load could be moved from the RAM and CPU to the consoles' myriad graphics doodads, then it seems it would work, but I'm no expert by any measure.

We can dream...

If it does go to any next-gen console, Data would most likely put it on a 360. :x360:

Why? Using the Wiimote with CC would probably be a nightmare, apparently it's difficult to develop for PS3 (something about the Cell processor), the game works well with a 360 controller and is already configured to work with it, and a lot more people play 360 (which probably means more $$$.

Plus, I'm not sure if the Wii can handle the stress on it's processor.

mombasa is right, but so is grif, if this is put on 360 marketplace, first Data would have to do some major work, second he probably would have to pay microsoft to get it to work on the 360, third grif is right because I have 3 gig ram, and CC usually uses about 60-80% cpu power, that is when I'm NOT doing anything like setting off a nuke, ect.

It would work, and would be nice, but it would lag like hell, and cost data $$ to begin with, also although more people have a 360, less people than you think have xbox live, and even less use the market for much. For instance, if it was put on for the 360, how many people do you think would just for no reason known to them go on xbox live, go on the marketplace, go to games and say "oh look cortex command, that sounds like a cool game, I'm gonna buy it for $"
