Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
And I say again, it has nothing to do wit hthe popularity of the individual. It has to do with their legitimacy on this board. People are familiar enough with LT to know that a mod he makes isn't stupid on accident, it is stupid by design. If he chooses to make silly mods--he is making a conscious decision to do so.
The alternative is mods that are silly due to inadequacy or failure of design. If someone doesn't know enough--or doesn't care enough--to make their mod either useful or comical, then of course that mod is going to be destroyed by popular opinion.
The "case and point (by which I think you mean case in point)" is that more comical, less serious mods are actually taken as comedy based on the individual. We know LT makes silly mods, and we laugh and have a jolly good time. RandomModder attempts to make a normal mod and it ends up being crappy, and we have a jolly good time with the flamethrowers instead. It has nothing to do with popularity. It is all about legitimacy.
Secondly, I would like you--as the aggravator in this case--to go back to the Build 18 archives and find existing instances where the general populous lauded a mod that was "crappy" by current standards. I assure you, you won't be able to find it. Please do not try to cite a specific example without actually finding an example. Maybe you should prove to us that this actually happens--because it doesn't, pure and simple.
So anyway, I challenge you--Miles--to find two nearly identical mods and prove to me that one was deemed better than the other purely because of who created it. Post the results of your research here. If you don't, we will all know you are a drama-whoring crybaby and will further decrease whatever legitimacy and humility you have in my (and everyone elses) mods.
Can't you see what everyone else sees? I sure hope so--for your sake.

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
(Looks up) Man English kills... Since I am more of a mod user than a mod maker, I download mods by: A. Coming across a interesting name on the first pass though the Mods forum: ex. "Walking Artillery" (Brings up thoughts from various media, Ghost in a Shell? Shirow?) B. Stumbling on a name or a picture (referenced from another post or thread): ex. Coalition Liberator (Seriously thought it was just some souped up coalition soldier before I even bothered to try it) C. The mod itself is fun: ex. Darklones... (The weapons dammit, I liked wondering how the hell does the EM Shotgun kill what I wanted to kill, while at the same time ripping the legs off my guy) D. Interest: People say its awesome but its just not your taste: ex. Crusaders? The only bad mods to me are: Copies without original creators permission or statements about the source or ones that have potential, but the creators just dumped it. I really can't think of any more... Annnnd I hardly recall the names of those who made the mods. A lot of us are making actors because we wanna have our "own" guy. For example mine I wanted a (near human sized) armored robot, so I sprited it, now I'm working on it, even though its really buggy, I'm having fun with it. I'm still wondering how the HELL did I lose this one, I was testing my guys damage (more like killing my own guys over and over) and I hear some gunshots and glass shattering, I was going WTF for a few minutes while dancing around the room. Don't underestimate random ideas, kind of explains the giant dropships etc etc. You're being paranoid, you gotta have fun with it, throw out game balance a bit, (theres no multiplayer yet). AND THERE ARE NO RULES ON HOW YOU WANT YOUR MOD. If your mod sucked, just update it and fix whatever people said sucked about it (Stuff does get ripped out when you import things from another game). Quit being stubborn and using "This has to be true to _____" as a excuse, pretty sure when they imported WH40k from the table to the RTS, they had to change a lot of stuff to make the game more interesting. Or just make a new one. Popular people just get their mods downloaded more, but if it sucks, it becomes a dent on their resume.

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
you didn't break it, you proved it. you are popular, ergo, it succeeded. I even said, you could do that, and people would still download and think its awesome. I have to admit, Of your mods, Really, I enjoyed 1. this might be #2. I have downloaded ALLOT of mods, because allot of people said they where good. I only use 10% of the mods I have because the rest suck. think about that.

I've downloaded maybe two or three mods and use none. I win. Also I win. Also, which one did you like?

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
I think the point that LordTim and I are trying to make is:
Corny, stupid mods can be popular and entertaining--regardless of the creator. The problem is that the older, more prevalent modders tend to be, well, a lot better at modding. LordTim's creations exist because he wants them to be that way. Other stupid mods are that way because--well--the people are stupid as well.

I don't remember at the moment, i'd have to go digging. your point is the Left side My point is the right side. you Did not disprove the left, because first and foremost you proved the right. What you did is the bright green (duh) Attachment:

In order to prove my point. you would have to succeed at the left one, or at least, succeed at making a good mod, WITH OUT SUCCEEDING AT THE CHART ON THE RIGHT SIDE!

Lord Tim wrote: Yeah, but I could put any if statements I want in there. yeah... but you couldn't do that, like that, AND prove me wrong at the same time. you by default are popular, liked by the trolls, and all that. In fact, on 'your supergun' Exalion wrote: ... if you were anyone else, you would have been flamed to smithereens. but it's you... if that can still be said, then your proving my point for me. I know that you have a valid point, and I DO understand that. However, I started this to figure out why MY point was true, not why the other isn't as well. if you can't prove me wrong, that your being right about something else is invalidated by what I said in my first post.

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
Call me the objective reviewer.
I have no bias in this discussion.
Both sides, I welcome you to debate the reasoning behind both of your arguments. However, you also need to submit counter-arguments; both of you are required to see the other's viewpoint before continuing into this debate.
I am the objective reviewer. If both of you are unwilling to sway on your own viewpoints in this issue, as I doubt you are, to judge from this particular thread, then I will have to consider both viewpoints, and decide who the victor was.
I admit that I bear no true authority here; I represent neither side in this debate. I am neither an experienced forum "veteran", nor a denizen of IRC.
Thus, I can only be considered an objective reviewer.
See how this is beginning to work?
Now, either PM or post your arguments, I'll read through them as soon as I have a chance.

Why not just read the topic and post your opinion?
Ok, Miles, I like you because how, even though alot of the forum dislikes you, you still can't be proved wrong because of how stubborn you are.
Who said being stubborn was a bad thing?
But you are wrong here, mods can be whatever the mod creator wants, if Lord Tim made a giant smily ball that rolls around and is useless, I wouldn't like it, I hardly like his rainbow gun of suicide (whatever you called it). Doesn't mean I dislike the creator, just because I like a mod doesn't mean I like the creator.
Think of it this way- If say.. Data, or someone of that kind of importance, made a weapon that fired 2000 bullets per shot, fired 2000 shots per second, and had over 9000 (Urge.. to shout...) bullets in one magazine, it would be flamed to MARS and back.
Don't blame popularity on the maker.

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
The sad part is that Miles is too ♥♥♥♥ retarded to realize that LT made that mod in parody of this ruination of mankind Miles decided to post about.
We're only making a big deal out of his mod to make fun of you, Miles. Its not a real, legitimate, experimental result.

Re: Why does this keep happening with mods?
Damn, i can't stand this bull♥♥♥♥ anymore. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE ORIGINAL, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE BALANCED, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE GOOD, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE MOD FROM POPULAR MAKER, ETC! Mod should be more like fun to play...Oh, and you should know we all like different mods, so don't be such a pussy.
So, ENOUGH THIS bull♥♥♥♥! Make a fun mod, not pack of guns whit little bit variables changed.
And last, Miles. You fail. So in my language, simply "♥♥♥♥ YOU"

PS: Lord Tim, your mod is teh win!
