Alt. Rock is a friggin' huge catergorie son.
But me definition is something thats other than the typical rock 'n' roll stuff like ACDC, Guns 'n' Roses, and that kind of thing.

First of all there's already a term for independant-label rock music.
Second of all NIN is on a major label.
Most of what people call "alternative" is major-label attempts at sort of kind of sounding like indie rock without being too offensive - not that what's normally called "indie rock" is that spectacular either.
