You look to Karina expectantly. She looks back. You stare at each other.
...
Karina: "Oh! You mean now? Um... well... Do we have time?"
Frederic: "We will be there soon."
Well, learning a spell DOES take time. To learn a spell, you need to have someone or something that knows it create the formation, and then take over the cast and use your own mana to finish the spell, repeatedly. Until your mana memorizes the spell formation on its own, and you can cast it without an external aid in forming it. Usually this is done by a magic stone or device, since those are easy to use; just put your mana into it and bam, cast. Though, a mage can also form the spell and let someone else cast it, which is a bit trickier but still doable.
The only real problem is, well, it usually takes dozens of casts.
Gram: "No time like the present!"
Karina: "Trrrueee, doing it now won't really hurt... Ok! Let's practice!"

And so, you practice casting Karina's Energize spell for the rest of the flight, only about 20 minutes. You only manage a few casts in that time, since it takes you a while to actually cast someone else's spell. From what you've heard, it never stops being an odd feeling, even to a master mage.

As you're wrapping up the first bit of magic training, you look in front and see a few colorful bubbles floating through the air.
Karina: "Oh! What are those?"
Frederic: "Slimes, I assume. I've not seen any flying ones before, but that down there gives us a hint."
You head to the bow of the ship and look down to see what Frederic is talking about.
Oh. Yeah, that's... that's a slime island alright. It's a medium sized island, mostly dirt and rocks at this point, absolutely COVERED in slime. There's a thin layer of somewhat shimmery goo covering every surface, with larger colorful piles and heaps of the stuff dotted around the island. Individual slimes hop around, small orb creatures with their core tucked inside, almost looking like an eyeball.
There must be hundreds of slimes hopping around the surface of the island, with several dozen more floating around in the air. And that's not including those big heaps of surprisingly rigid goo that- oh, yep, a new slime just popped out of one. Probably breeding pods, or queens, or... piles. Or however slime reproduction works.
There are several other ships in the area, most of which hunting the floating slime bubbles, but some are moored to a small slime-free island floating a bit off from the main island, connected by a small bridge. Looks like some small stone totem keeps the slimes from approaching the bridge and the mooring zone. Neat.

Frederic: "Well I should hope not. You're a gun user after all. That's my job to get in their personal space. We've got a basic party setup, let's use that. Me in front, Karina in back, Gram in the middle and contributing wherever needs it."
Karina: "That works! Should we hunt some of the floating bubbles on the ship, or land and take them on on foot?"

"Ship first, land if getting them by ship isn't efficient enough."

Frederic: "Alright. Be careful of the ship while we fight then."
Frederic pilots the ship closer slowly, entering the field of slime bubbles, then sets the ship to float. The three of you take position on deck, casually watching the bubbles for one to float over.
A few minutes pass, and a greenish slime floats towards the ship. As you all ready yourselves, the slime noisily deflates and plops down onto the deck.

I'm 90% sure she can't do that.

Frederick stands by, waiting for Gram to make the first move.

Gram Analyzes the slime.
Acidic, though with a weak slime like this it's only a problem if it touches the skin. The squishy body will absorb most physical damage, unless it hits the core, in which case it will do tremendous damage.
Gram: "Alright Frederic, let it have it."

Frederic nods, then swings down his sword on the slime using the flat of the blade, like a giant steel paddle.
It hits cleanly, and you see the slime's body bulge out around the edges of the greatsword, before squishing back into shape as Frederic lifts his weapon. You didn't know it was possible for a slime to look dented.
Slime takes 6 damage.

The slime then wobbles somewhat uncertainly, but still manages to jump at Frederic, who easily blocks it with his sword.
Frederic takes 0 damage.

Karina waits.
