Mary: "A banshee... Wait, you don't know? Uhm, this might be a bit rude to ask, but how long has it been since you woke up?"

Mary laughs again, the sound friendly and melodious.

Mary: "Oh dear! I'm terribly sorry then, I've been getting ahead of myself this whole time. Some times I forget not everyone is quite as much of an old lady as I am!

A banshee is a tool of the Master's. The simpler undead, the rank and file, don't have any augmentations. So, they can't receive long-distance orders, at least not very easily. The banshee relays instructions to them through its voice, like a uh, megaphone of sorts?

They're known for being... Very agressive, and generally unpredictable if there's no Savant around to control them. I can't imagine why it'd have taken a liking to your friend! Why, for a moment I started to worry you were under the Master's command."

"We've encountered another banshee, I think, that had a mob of zombies try to kill us. Emilia is different... Or could be a spy. I don't know.

Who is the 'Master' anyways?"

Mary: "Well... There's a question I never thought I'd have to answer. The Master! The necromancer who rules this land! I've heard he's not the one who conquered it originally, but, for as long as I can remember, he's been the one in charge.

If anything moves or works, it is because the Master made it, or allowed it to be. Why, there's a good chance he built you all in the first place!

And, I am a savant. I suppose you all are too, though one can never be sure, can they? Undead with more than a modicum of self-awareness. Capable of forging their own paths, instead of mindlessly following their mind's programming. Sentience is a gift the Master gave rather freely, it seems, for most of his higher ranking troops are savants.

Goodness, I feel like a schoolmistress right now. It is rather refreshing, in a way."

"Hm. Well. We woke up from some, pods, underground. And then pulled Emilia and another girl out of some other pods. And then she liked Klimt. Maybe it's because he's a boy.
I wonder if the other girl is a Banshee too."

As if on cue, Eigla pulls the radiohead doll from her coffin, showing her to Mary. The shepherdess's eyes suddenly glimmer with... Something? You can't quite make out the emotion before she returns to her usual calm self.

Mary: Good heavens, she's intact! Ahem. No, I don't think she's a banshee. They tend to have very visible breathing mods, and hemoglobin-rich blood, leading to that veiny look... Emilia... Has.

This one's looking more like a Mobile Relay. The kind that allows undead which are radio-enabled, but not savants, to operate outside the range of the control towers.

You say you pulled her from a pod. Did it open on its own, or was the enclosure damaged?"

Meanwhile, Klimt listens in from afar.

Klimt: "A banshee? Well, she does address me as Master."

Emilia meows at the mention of the word Master, while Peggy continues to hide, having pretty much retracted all of her limbs and head into her poncho.

"The pod was damaged. By us. We kinda smashed it open. In retrospect that was probably a bad idea.

You seem interested in this one. What exactly are your thoughts on her."

Mary shrugs apologetically.

Mary: "Well, uhm- It's a bit embarrassing to admit this, but I too need Flesh from time to time. And her body is quite pristine, isn't it? Lots of quality material.

Also, not exactly normal zombies- Well.

This is gonna be a long-winded, and uh, sound a little old-fashioned. Pre-End naming, you see. I don't think there's been much research on the nature of undeath since then.

At the bottom of the food chain, you have the Legions. As a rule of thumb, they're either mass-cloned bodies or made from badly decayed remains. The Mold reanimates them, but doesn't change their body structure significantly. They have very primitive minds, as a rule of thumb, and can only be programmed by a direct interface or using something like a banshee.

Then there's Horrors (rather unflattering name, don't you think?), like your banshee friend. They have one or more deceased persons as their core, and are capable of some level of sentience, depending on their programming. Some can even talk, but don't expect them to be able to hold a complex conversation. Some have electronic receptors installed, others grow magnetic crystals in their cerebellum, but they're all able to be rewired remotely. Very few have any sort of uplink, though.

Finally, there's us, Savants. In general, we're standalone units, capable of receiving orders but not directly slaved to them like the Horrors. I am not sure what exactly makes our minds different - but there must be something, since we tend to retain a large amount of our previous lives' personalities.

This is all uh, a very broad overview. Nowadays, nothing really conforms to what you'd expect, and there's a lot of movement between the tiers. I've even... Uh, heard of nonhuman mutants turning into savants, though it's very rare.

This doll was probably removed from her pod before her mind was transferred. When a colony goes dormant, it tends to lose its programming over time. If something is left, some times it can reorganize itself and recover the memories, but in her case... She seems pretty empty.

Sorry for rambling, I hope that wasn't too hard to grasp. I tend to use technical terms far too often, I'm afraid."
