"With technology... hm. Well, I suppose there is a way. Everyone is unique, so everybody has their own unique ether 'signature,' I suppose you could call it. If you had a device that could pick up an ether signature- that's a challenge in of itself, though it could be done with a sentient AI- you could then 'jam' that signature or frequency, if you will. It would at least interfere, if not totally block somebody's ether abilities. It'd also depend on the strength of whoever is being blocked. Any way you turn it, you're fighting ether with ether, and it would take a lot of power to pull off. I don't think you can permanently block or remove somebody's ether powers, short of putting a bullet in their brain- no consciousness, no ether."

"Not totally sure. Seems like they were doing a lot of research into ether, biotech, and integrations of the two- using a combo of machinery and living beings to try and harness the power of ether better. I was hoping to stop Absalom so I didn't have time to take a gander at much, but there was definitely something in this room that he used to achieve his... transformation."

Game Events "Alright, time's up. I've gotta get going." The Agent seems to be about to do something, but then stops as if remembering something. "Oh, before I leave, though, I'm gonna give each of you one of these:" His right hand flashes and he holds it out. Each group member moves forward and picks up a glowing silver crystal shard. "Concentrate ether into that and you can contact me. Sort of like telepathy. If you see an etherbeing, I'd like to know about it- part of my job is containing the ♥♥♥♥ to the Ethersphere. Can't have them running around and killing stuff. Oh, and if any of you happens to get really proficient with ether, then contact me too." He turns and stretches out a glowing hand, then seems to grab something in the air. With a deft yank of his clenched fist, a portal appears where nothing had been just moments before. All of the group members looking at the portal see literally nothing- the space isn't invisible, nor is it just white or black; it's like their eyes know something is there, but their minds can't comprehend what they're seeing. "By the way, as far as I can tell, the rest of the facility is clear of any sentient beings. No humans, no bots with functional combat AI. Guess you can breathe easy for now." He stops and seems to be on the verge of saying something. "Ciao," the Agent finally says as he steps through the portal and it disappears behind him.
The party stands around in silence. "Well uh... that was... interestin'," Jackson finally says, breaking the silence. "I guess we can explore this place for loot without worryin' 'bout dyin', at least. If ya'll wanna check out the other half- I think it's R 'n D, right?- go ahead. I'll be gatherin' up the spoils from here that nobody claims. Just gonna check on the ship and then come back, so ya'll grab what you want." He walks out the room, heading back the way the party came to reach the chamber.
You can now explore the Utataku Research Facility freely. If you want to loot any weapons or equipment from defeated enemies, now is the time to do so. For ease of progression I won't count moving to other rooms as an action and you can move around wherever you want more or less instantly, but you will still do a quality roll when you try to loot something.

The entire area is made out of a bright white metal and is lighted by fluorescent bulbs that seem to be fitted into the arched ceiling of the halls. "Huh-uh." D returns to the second combat chamber containing the skeletal remains of a large mecha. Much of the machine is heavily damaged and worse, the parts are all custom-made, unique- definitely not integrable with D's systems. "Perhaps I can find some software or information in the cockpit." He clambers up to the cockpit and peers through the hole in the thick hull to find the space devoid of a pilot. Evidently, the mech can be controlled remotely or perhaps even autonomously. D drops into the cockpit, finding it surprisingly roomy, and checks to see if any of the controls will respond. The space stays dark, however. "Hm.
