Ah ha ha. I only commented on how I love the metric system last night.

Now for some relevant matters. I once saw a documentary that stated the worlds largest ant, namely the stink ant, could achieve about 5 cm and is the only one audible to the human ear.

To be fair I was hallucinating from insane humidity when writing that post. I edited it about 7 times in total.

As for the stink ant, I can't find that much information on it, but it doesn't seem to be particularly aggressive or painful. Army ant workers hit about 2cm while the soldiers hit about 3cm, and they have a very painful venom which produces pustules that usually lead to severe infections if burst. They're called "army" ants because the soldiers move in huge swarms and make raids on prey, which can include things as large as rodents (rats, squirrels, et al) Stink ants seem marginally less impressive, if they're as large as you say. I didn't see any information on them when searching for big ants, but thanks for bringing that up.

EDIT: Now that's an insane size. 30cm is almost a foot. Six of these ants vertically are taller than an average person. Awesome.
