My problem with Jotun having a soul is that at its core, it is simply a decentralized multiple consciousness consisting of thousands of independent processor cycles that have been so tampered with and heavily altered (either by virus bombardment or something... else) that it has achieved sentience and independence. It is not one person or one thing with one soul/consciousness, it's more like the biblical Legion (an army of demons in one man, etc.).

Come to terms with having a soul and feeling pain. Divide processor cycles between introspection and examining the nature of a soul.

Maybe the Jotun would be split between the remaining, rational collective cycles and the emotional soul. Kind of like both are fighting for ultimate control.
