The mold could be kept functional without a host organism, though it would not be particularly efficient. Most strains of mold contain regenerative subroutines, so they would attempt to use whatever nutrients they received to reconstruct the pattern's body, at least to some degree.

Finally, cloning - Unit is a clone, in a way, though grown from parts of Judith's flesh, and not solely her Pattern. The distributed, parallel nature of Mold-based data processing makes it so that, when separating an Undead in two or more parts of substantial size, both retain a major portion of its consciousness and memories.

Meanwhile, Rosa and Eigla hug one another, sharing their warmth in the cold night. The sharkgirl does not quite understand what went wrong, but she's there to comfort her shield whenever the need arises.

Meanwhile, Rosa wraps herself around Eigla like a snake, doing her best to be warm and comforting.

And all will know me as the queen-mother of humanity, and feel honored to see and desire me. And you will be by my side when that day comes, dear.
